Job summary

AtkinsRéalis Heritage is seeking an Archaeological Consultant or Senior Consultant to support a range of heritage projects across the UK and internationally. Based in London or Birmingham, you will lead fieldwork programs, oversee subcontractors, and shape mitigation and outreach strategies.

You will bring a strong UK heritage background, a relevant Masters, and knowledge of planning, EIA, and consent processes for listed monuments, with a pro-active, client-focused approach.

Qualifications

• Strong background in the UK's historic environment with focus on archaeological fieldwork.
• Masters level or higher in archaeology or substantial commercial experience.
• Knowledge of planning (including EIA) and heritage legislation and guidance.
• Knowledge of consent processes for listed buildings and scheduled monuments.
• Willingness to work across the UK and internationally as project requirements.
• Full, clean UK driving licence and Health and Safety awareness.
• Member of the Institute for Archaeologists at Associate level or above (CIfA).
• Experience in a commercial consultancy environment.

Your role

We are seeking an Archaeological Consultant/Professional Archaeological Consultant or Senior Consultant to join AtkinsRéalis Heritage team, supporting the delivery of a wide range of heritage services and archaeological projects nationally and internationally. You will be based in our London or Birmingham offices.

• Principally management and QA of archaeological fieldwork programmes and archaeological subcontractors, including supporting and delivering the role of Archaeological Clerk of Works on major infrastructure projects in the South-East and East of England.
• Contributing to defining and developing the scope, programme, and design of heritage works, including delivery of archaeological mitigation and research strategies, and public archaeological outreach programmes.
• Providing technical advice to a range of clients and internal teams on a diverse range of projects.
• Preparing and contributing to EIA screening and environmental statements, heritage statements, desk-based assessments, written schemes of investigation and consent applications.
• Assessing heritage constraints to inform and influence design development.
• Delivery of medium to large scale projects to ensure they are delivered on time and to budget.
• Consultation and liaison with heritage stakeholders and client project teams as required.
• Production of fee proposals and providing technical inputs on tenders.

About you

• You will have a strong background in the knowledge of the UK's historic environment, with a focus on delivering archaeological fieldwork, with good commercial awareness and knowledge of the UK planning system.
• Relevant Masters level, or higher qualification in archaeology or considerable experience in the commercial archaeological sector akin to this level of qualification.
• Working knowledge of the planning process (including EIA) and relevant environmental / heritage legislation, policy and guidance.
• Knowledge of the consenting process for listed buildings and scheduled monuments.
• Willingness to work across the UK in client and AtkinsRéalis' offices as fits project requirements; with the opportunity to work internationally.
• Full, clean, UK driving license and Health and Safety awareness and experience of H&S on archaeological projects.
• Member of the Institute for Archaeologists at least at Associate level or above of the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists (CIfA).
• Experience in a commercial consultancy environment.
• Capable of working under pressure with the ability to meet critical deadlines and innovation in approach to archaeological and heritage matters;
• Technical or specialist subject expert (i.e.: periods, themes, environmental or other field and post excavation specialisms and outreach).
