Job summary

AECOM is hiring a Principal Electrical Engineer - Overhead Lines (OHL) to lead the T&D OHL design team in the UK, driving technical excellence on HV projects up to 400kV. The role offers a hybrid work model and opportunities to shape standards, engage with clients, and mentor a growing cable systems engineering group.

You will lead feasibility studies, develop design criteria, and deliver complex drawings and reports for major infrastructure schemes in a collaborative, innovative environment.

Qualifications

• Professionally qualified CEng Chartered Engineer with a recognised electrical engineering institution (e.g. the IET).
• A bachelor’s degree in engineering or equivalent technical discipline, electrical engineering or power engineering.
• Experience delivering projects for transmission system operators such as National Grid, SSE and SPT in line with each operator’s standards. CDAE accreditation is highly advantageous.
• Project experience in overhead line engineering (ideally up to 400kV).
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Be involved in large programmes of work like National Grid’s Great Grid Upgrade project.
• Write proposals outlining project details including timeline, resources, budget, objectives and goals.
• Provide technical support and input throughout project implementation, planning, and public consultation events.
• Hold responsibility for assigned design activities related to the overhead line, including PLS-CADD modelling, line routing, structural analysis and loadings, sag-tension calculations, insulator/conductor selection.
• Lead on feasibility studies, conductor thermal ratings, and regulatory compliance.
