Job summary

CesiumAstro in Cambridge seeks a Principal Mechanical Design Engineer I to advance hardware for satellites and aerospace systems, leading design from concept to qualification.

You will mentor junior engineers, collaborate with electrical teams on PCBAs and CCAs, perform thermal analyses, EMI/EMC mitigation, and contribute to proposals and customer reviews.

Qualifications

  • BS or MS in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering from an accredited university.
  • 9+ years in electronics packaging design and analysis including thermal, vibration and stress simulations.
  • Experience with aerospace space industry design, development and qualification.
  • Experience collaborating with electrical engineers on PCBAs/CCAs.
  • Proficiency with CAD/FEA tools (SolidWorks & Ansys).
  • Experience with CNC manufacturing.
  • EMI/EMC mitigation experience.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Mechanical design of Cesium products through all development phases.
  • From concept through requirements, detailed design, simulation, testing, qualification, and in-orbit support.
  • Thermal management design, TD analyses, and cost optimization.
  • Mentor junior engineers and present design reviews to customers and executives.
  • Contribute to proposals and customer discussions.
  • Maintain clear written and verbal communication throughout projects.

Principal Mechanical Design Engineer I

We are looking for a Principal Mechanical Design Engineer I to join our team. If you thrive in a startup environment and are passionate about developing leading‑edge hardware for satellites, spacecraft and aerospace systems, we would like to hear from you.

Key Responsibilities
  • Mechanical design of Cesium products through all phases of the development process.
  • Responsible for mechanical designs from initial concept through requirements definition, detailed design, simulation, analysis, manufacturing, testing, qualification and in‑orbit support of Cesium's products.
  • Thermal management design, precision machining principles, thermal simulation and analysis, shock and vibration simulation and analysis, EMI/EMC mitigation techniques, GD&T, FEA, and cost analysis to develop, validate and optimise mechanical designs.
  • Serve as technical and professional mentor to junior engineers.
  • Present engineering design review materials to customers and executive team and participate in proposal‑writing efforts.
  • Provide excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Job Requirements and Minimum Qualifications
  • A Bachelor of Science (BS) or Master of Science (MS) degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering from an accredited university.
  • At least 9 years of industry experience in design and analysis of electronics packaging, including thermal, vibration and stress dynamics hand calculations and simulations.
  • Expertise in aerospace and space industry design, development and qualification.
  • Expert‑level proficiency with electronics assemblies and experience collaborating closely with electrical engineers on PCBAs, CCAs.
  • Expert‑level proficiency with professional mechanical CAD (SolidWorks preferred) and FEA tools (Ansys preferred).;
  • Experience with CNC manufacturing.
  • Experience with EMI/EMC mitigation techniques.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
