Job description

We’re working with an innovative engineering business developing advanced technology for the next generation of electrified and high-performance mobility.

As the business continues to expand its engineering capabilities, they are looking for an experienced Principal Mechanical Engineer to join the team and take ownership of the mechanical design, thermal performance and physical integration of complex electromechanical systems.

This is a highly technical role spanning the full development lifecycle — from initial concept and detailed design through analysis, testing, validation and production readiness.

The Role

You’ll be responsible for delivering robust, manufacturable designs that perform reliably under demanding real-world conditions.

Your responsibilities will include:
  • Leading the mechanical design and physical integration of complex electromechanical systems.
  • Developing rotating assemblies, retention systems, shafts, bearings and housings.
  • Ensuring structural integrity during high-speed operation, including burst strength, fatigue and containment.
  • Developing air-cooled thermal management strategies, including cooling paths, airflow management, thermal interfaces and material selection.
  • Working with permanent magnet, flux management, winding and insulation technologies.
  • Integrating speed, position and temperature sensing solutions.
  • Working closely with electromagnetic and controls engineers to translate performance targets into practical, manufacturable designs.
  • Leading and contributing to mechanical, thermal and dynamic analysis, including stress, deformation, rotor dynamics, balance, vibration and heat flow.
  • Carrying out tolerance stack-up and manufacturability assessments.
  • Leading FMEA, failure analysis, root-cause investigations and corrective actions.
  • Defining and owning structured test and validation programmes.
  • Working with the test team to develop clear, executable test plans, instrumentation requirements and test setups.
  • Reviewing test data to validate design intent and drive design improvements.
  • Ensuring designs are suitable for manufacture and production scale-up, considering assembly, tooling, materials, supply chain and cost.
  • Supporting internal and customer-facing activities, communicating technical decisions, trade-offs and performance outcomes.
What We're Looking For

We’re looking for an experienced Mechanical Engineer who has worked on complex rotating or electromechanical systems, ideally within automotive, motorsport, aerospace, defence or another high-performance engineering environment.

You’ll ideally have:

  • Strong experience in the mechanical design of high-performance rotating or electromechanical systems.
  • Experience with high-speed rotating assemblies and retention systems.
  • Experience with thermal management and air-cooled systems.
  • Practical experience of build, testing and validation.
  • Experience leading or contributing to FMEA and failure analysis.
  • Strong understanding of materials, manufacturing processes and Design for Manufacture.
  • Experience with mechanical and thermal analysis tools.
  • The ability to balance performance, durability, manufacturability and cost.
  • Experience working within multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • A structured, evidence-based approach to engineering decision-making.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to explain complex technical concepts clearly.
  • An Engineering Degree or equivalent professional accreditation.
  • Willingness to travel when required to meet business and customer needs.
Why Join?

This is an exciting opportunity to join a high-performance engineering business working at the forefront of electrified mobility and advanced motion-control technology.

You’ll have genuine technical ownership across the complete product development lifecycle, working alongside engineers across mechanical, thermal, electrical, controls and test disciplines.

If you’re a Principal or highly experienced Mechanical Engineer looking for a technically challenging role where you can influence the design of next-generation technology, this could be an excellent opportunity.
