Job summary

AtkinsRéalis in the United Kingdom is seeking a Principal Mechanical Engineer to lead building services design from concept to handover. You will act as Technical Lead on multi-disciplinary projects, driving sustainable, energy-efficient solutions and BIM coordination using Revit.

You will mentor engineers, help win work, and ensure compliance with UK regulations while maintaining strong client relationships across healthcare, education and industry sectors.

Qualifications

  • Degree qualified in Mechanical Engineering, Building Services Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) with CIBSE, IMechE or an equivalent professional institution.
  • Experience delivering mechanical building services projects within a consultancy environment.
  • Demonstrable experience leading multidisciplinary design teams on complex projects.
  • Strong understanding of UK building regulations, industry standards and engineering best practice.
  • Experience in client-facing roles and managing stakeholder relationships.
  • Ability to review, approve and direct the production of technical deliverables.
  • Experience undertaking design calculations and using industry-standard software packages.
  • Excellent communication, presentation and report-writing skills.
  • Proven ability to lead, motivate and develop engineering teams.

  • Develop innovative, sustainable and energy-efficient engineering solutions across a wide range of sectors.
  • Provide technical leadership and guidance to multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, contractors and key stakeholders.
  • Lead technical discussions and represent AtkinsRéalis at client meetings, workshops and design reviews.
  • Prepare and review engineering calculations, reports, specifications and design documentation.
  • Oversee the development and coordination of BIM models and design information using Revit and other digital engineering tools.
  • Support project managers in managing project delivery, programme, resources, budgets and technical risks.
  • Contribute to business development activities including bids, proposals, fee submissions and client presentations.
  • Mentor, coach and support the development of engineers, graduates and apprentices.
  • Drive innovation, technical excellence and continuous improvement across the practice.
  • Champion AtkinsRéalis’ sustainability agenda, supporting clients in achieving their net zero carbon and environmental objectives.

Job Description Overview AtkinsRéalis’ Engineering and Design Practice is seeking an experienced and motivated Principal Mechanical Engineer to join our Building Services team. This is an exciting opportunity to play a leading role in the delivery of technically challenging and innovative projects across a diverse portfolio including Healthcare, Defence, Education, Commercial, Energy and Public Sector developments. As a Principal Mechanical Engineer, you will provide technical leadership on multi-disciplinary projects, oversee the delivery of high-quality engineering solutions and develop trusted relationships with clients and project stakeholders. You will be part of a nationally connected team, collaborating with colleagues across the UK and globally through our Global Technology Centre to deliver sustainable, low‑carbon and digitally enabled building services solutions. This role offers the opportunity to influence technical direction, support business growth, mentor developing engineers and contribute to AtkinsRéalis’ reputation for engineering excellence. Your role

You will be an experienced mechanical building services engineer with a passion for technical excellence, client service and developing people.

Essential Requirements
