Job description

Overview

Are you a senior structural/civil marine engineer looking for the next step in your career? With us, you get to work on globally significant projects, both locally and internationally, while working with leading professionals within the maritime sector.

Responsibilities

Your role will involve using your technical and practical experience to develop engineering design solutions for maritime civil engineering structures in ports and shipyards, utilizing materials such as steel, concrete, and timber according to relevant design codes. You will contribute to all project stages, from inception through design and construction to demolition, recycling, and reuse. Your technical and commercial experience, along with your ability to liaise with multi-disciplinary teams, will be vital to the success of the projects you work on. You will act as a Project Manager for small and medium-sized projects or a Technical Manager on large/complex projects. You provide guidance to more junior staff, including project managers, engineers, graduates, technicians, and admin staff working on your projects. You will also provide:

  • Prepare designs and analysis for maritime and associated structures for ports and shipyards.
  • Carry out inspections and surveys.
  • Produce design calculations and check and review calculations produced by others.
  • Check and review models and drawings before issuing them.
  • Prepare Bills of Quantities, Contract Documents, and Specifications.
  • Undertake structural analyses and reporting.

Your role will involve giving presentations to client organisations and internal audiences, providing engineering judgement and advice, and reviewing (or preparing) study reports to a high standard of written English. You will provide commercial awareness of projects to deliver profitable results within the programme by setting and agreeing expectations and achieving on-time delivery. You will contribute to local, national, and international business development efforts through the production of proposals and interaction with clients.

At Haskoning, you will join an independent, employee-owned international consultancy that combines engineering, design, and consultancy services with software and technology. Qualifications

You possess strong analytical and conceptual abilities, enabling you to lead design and analysis work with limited support and undertake design from concept to construction‑ready stages. Your excellent communication skills allow you to clearly articulate the reasons behind your decisions, both orally and in writing, and you show confidence in presenting to team members, clients, and stakeholders. You maintain a professional client‑facing approach, think laterally to develop solutions to problems and build a network within the immediate team and the wider organisation as a trusted advisor to our clients.

You are solution‑oriented, delivering project objectives without losing focus on the details, and you demonstrate organisation, discipline, and a structured, consistent approach in your work. Additionally, you are personable, approachable, relatable, and empathetic.

  • Demonstrate experience in developing shipyard infrastructure, including heavy‑duty quays, dry docks, floating docks, and ship lifts.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to training junior staff, e.g., as a Delegated Engineer or Supervising Civil Engineer within an ICE training scheme.
  • Have an educational background in Civil/Structural Engineering (BSc, Beng, MSc, CEngMice or CEng MiStructE).
  • Possess professional experience in planning and designing maritime structures.
  • Are familiar with international maritime and structural engineering standards, manuals, etc.
  • Are willing to travel occasionally throughout the UK and overseas.
