Job summary
Stantec is seeking a Principal Hydraulic Engineer to join our growing Hydraulic Engineering team in the UK, with flexible locations in Warrington, Leeds or Cambridge. You will lead technically complex hydraulic studies, from feasibility through to construction support, while mentoring engineers and nurturing client relationships.
Ideal candidates bring Chartered status, substantial UK water sector experience and strong fluid mechanics knowledge.
Qualifications
- Degree qualified in Civil/Mechanical/Hydraulic Engineering or related discipline.
- Chartered Engineer (CEng) status or working towards registration.
- Significant experience delivering hydraulic engineering projects in the UK water sector.
- Strong understanding of fluid mechanics, hydraulic structures and transient analysis.
- Experience using hydraulic modelling software such as HADES, VARISM, Flow-3D or equivalent.
- Experience leading technical delivery across multidisciplinary projects.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Experience mentoring and supporting developing engineers.

We're looking for a Principal Hydraulic Engineer to join our growing team in Warrington, Leeds or Cambridge. This is an exciting opportunity to lead the delivery of technically complex hydraulic engineering projects while working alongside recognised industry specialists within a collaborative multidisciplinary environment. You'll play a key role in delivering innovative solutions, strengthening client relationships and supporting the continued growth of our nationally recognised Hydraulic Engineering capability.
As a Principal Hydraulic Engineer, you'll lead the technical delivery of hydraulic engineering studies across a wide range of water infrastructure projects, supporting delivery from feasibility and optioneering through to detailed design and construction support.
- Leading complex hydraulic studies, including steady state and transient analysis.
- Providing technical guidance on hydraulic structures, pumping systems and conveyance assets.
- Reviewing hydraulic models, calculations and technical reports to ensure engineering excellence.
- Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, Project Managers and clients to develop innovative engineering solutions.

Your expertise will directly influence the resilience, efficiency and long‑term performance of critical water infrastructure across the UK. Through high‑quality hydraulic engineering, you'll help clients improve operational performance, reduce risk and deliver sustainable solutions that meet future environmental and regulatory challenges.
Beyond project delivery, you'll play an important role in developing technical capability across the business by mentoring colleagues, sharing specialist knowledge and driving engineering excellence. Your contribution will help strengthen Stantec's reputation as a trusted partner for complex hydraulic engineering solutions.
- Degree qualified (or equivalent) in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Hydraulic Engineering or a related discipline.
