Job summary

Jensen Hughes seeks a Fire Safety Surveyor to perform on-site inspections across the UK, including construction and operation phases. You will conduct fire stopping, fire compartmentation surveys, and fire door inspections, reporting to the Lead Surveyor and Divisional Director.

Role requires building survey/fire safety education, driving licence and ability to manage workloads. Travel with overnight stays may be required, and you will contribute to CPD sessions and knowledge sharing.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Building Surveying, Fire Safety Management or related discipline is required.
  • Full UK driving licence and access to private vehicle.
  • Understanding of fire safety design and guidance for different building types.
  • Experience undertaking fire compartmentation surveys and advising contractors.
  • Ability to author in-depth technical reports using site data and Word/digital tools.
  • Ability to input survey data via a mobile app, work independently and manage workload.
  • Knowledge of Fire Risk Assessment processes is desirable.

Job Overview

The successful candidate will perform critical technical support to our Fire Engineering and Fire Surveying teams and clients UK wide. Here at Jensen Hughes, our clients trust us to respond rapidly and deliver conclusive reports, of the highest technical standard. You will undertake on-site fire inspections/surveys (particularly during the construction phase as well as the operational phase) and will be involved in undertaking fire stopping and fire compartmentation surveys, fire door inspections and from time to time fire risk assessments. You will ultimately support the fire safety disciplines at Jensen Hughes. You will report direct to our Lead Surveyor and Divisional Director.

Responsibilities
  • Carrying out active and passive fire protection systems surveys and technical reports
  • Compliance assessment and understanding of the main British Fire Safety Legislation and standards applied to different building occupancies, such as Approved Document B (ADB), BS9999, BS9991 & BS7974 etc.
  • Updating the passive fire protection technical knowledge base as industry updates are implemented.
  • Undertaking third party oversight role of fire stopping and fire compartmentation installations.
  • Ability to liaise with product manufacturers and discuss tested details and primary test evidence which supports the installations in the field of application on-site.
  • Undertaking visual fire doors inspections and confirming any non-conformities with reference to BS8214.
  • Successfully managing your own client base and exceeding client expectations.
  • Providing in-house CPD presentations when the need arises in your specialist field.
  • Keeping updated with the latest industry guidance, product literature and sharing this knowledge with the wider organisation as part of continuous improvement.
  • Routinely travel to client sites for site surveys and meetings will be required on a regular basis with overnight stays sometimes required.
Requirements and Qualifications
  • Degree educated in Building Surveying, Fire Safety Management or other similar discipline.
  • Full UK driving licence and access to your own private vehicle.
  • Understanding of fire safety design and guidance for different building types.
  • Experience undertaking fire compartmentation surveys for internal fire stopping installations and advising the contractor based on the relevant manufacturer's literature.
  • The ability to author in depth technical reports utilising the information obtained during the site inspection using both bespoke digital fire protection software and Microsoft Word.
  • The ability to input survey data utilising an app on a mobile phone or tablet device, undertake works independently and manage your own workload as required.
  • A good knowledge of the Fire Risk Assessment process is desirable but not essential and a general appreciation of general risk/hazards within the built environment.
  • An advanced knowledge of construction methods, forms of construction.
  • Knowledge of internal passive fire protection products, fire testing regimes and the products field of application with reference to manufacturers installation details.
  • An advanced knowledge of refurbishment schemes and managing/advising Contractors on-site.
  • The ability to have an elevated attention to detail when reviewing information and during the surveying process on-site.
  • The ability to obtain the pertinent information from the relevant parties in order to formulate robust reporting.
  • Experience of carrying out intrusive external wall surveys on a wide range of new and existing buildings such as high-rise residential, office buildings, large retail complexes, storage facilities and historic buildings is desirable but not essential.
