Job description

We’re looking for a talented, passionate and versatile Principal Salesforce Engineer, to lead the technical direction for Salesforce programs across the Commercial domain, owning the Salesforce technical reference architecture and solution designs. You’ll ensure implementations are built to design, engineering standards, security, performance, and best practices. You’ll mentor engineers, drive technical quality, and partner with product, delivery, and security to realise business outcomes.

Our Salesforce technology stack is mostly made up of the following technologies: APEX, JavaScript, SOQL, SOSL, Flows, Lightening Web Components, HTML, CSS, Custom Objects, Complex Batch Jobs, Triggers, Azure DevOps, Odaseva & Copado, with internal integrations facilitated through our Azure Cloud Services architecture.

This is a hands‑on role, aligning to our wider Principal Engineering function, with close links to Enterprise Architecture and colleagues from other UK entities.

At AXA we work smart, empowering our people to balance their time between home and the office in a way that works best for them, their team and our customers. You'll work at least two days a week (40%) away from home, moving to three days a week (60%) in the future. Away from home means either attendance at one of our office locations, visiting clients or attending industry events. We’re also happy to consider flexible working arrangements, which you can discuss with Talent Acquisition.

What you’ll be doing:
  • Developing solutions to the required quality, design, coding, performance and security standards, in a fast‑paced agile environment
  • Creating, publishing, and maintaining architectural patterns, integration patterns, data models, security models, and performance guidelines for Salesforce deployments
  • Producing end‑to‑end solution designs for Salesforce programs, including data flows, integration contracts, data mapping, security considerations, and non‑functional requirements
  • Conducting formal design reviews (architectural reviews) and ongoing validation to verify that implementations align with the approved designs and standards
  • Architecting and approving integration approaches with data services, external systems, and middleware (e.g., Mulesoft); design data migration and synchronization patterns; define API contracts and SLAs
  • Leading platform performance tuning, scalability planning, and capacity planning
  • Mentoring engineers (developers, architects, admins) and lead technical design reviews, champion best practices, reuse of patterns, and knowledge sharing
  • Evaluating new Salesforce features, third‑party tools, and cloud options; influence platform strategy and roadmaps; contribute to portfolio‑level decisions
  • Taking technical ownership during incidents affecting Commercial Salesforce platforms; drive root‑cause analysis, remediation, and post‑incident reviews
What you’ll bring:
  • Extensive software engineering experience; with focus on Salesforce in a technical leadership capacity
  • Salesforce expertise across multiple Clouds (Financial Services Cloud, Sales Cloud, Service Cloud, Experience Cloud, Marketing Cloud)
  • Proven track record of leading design reviews, technical governance, and delivering scalable, secure solutions
  • Strong stakeholder management with the ability to present technical decisions to both technical and non‑technical audiences
  • Demonstrated mentoring and leadership of engineers; ability to influence across teams and geographies
  • Extensive experience with integrations to CRM/Marketing/HR systems and middleware (e.g., Mulesoft or equivalent), APIs, data modeling, and data migrations
  • Mastery of Salesforce development (Apex, LWC, Aura, Flows, SOQL/SOSL, governor limits) and integration patterns (REST/SOAP, Bulk API, asynchronous processing)
  • Understanding of Salesforce security model, sharing rules, field‑level security, identity, authentication (OAuth, SSO)
  • Salesforce Architect certifications (Architect, Technical Architect) or a pursuit toward the Salesforce Certified Technical Architect (CTA) desirable

As a precondition of employment for this role, you must be eligible and authorised to work in the United Kingdom.
