Job summary

A UK engineering firm is seeking a Principal Engineer to support engineering capabilities through the design lifecycle. Responsibilities include leading technical design packages and ensuring compliance with industry regulations. Essential experience includes a background in Defence, Nuclear, or Oil & Gas. A degree in Mechanical Engineering and chartered status or progress towards it are required. This role offers a hybrid working arrangement with travel to Plymouth site approximately two days a month.

Qualifications

  • Experience in Defence, Nuclear, Oil & Gas or other regulated industries.
  • Mechanical/process engineering background (fluid systems, hydraulics desirable).
  • Understanding of engineering design and safety practices.

  • Lead and manage technical design packages to meet requirements.

  • Integrate designs within the facility layout and manage interfaces.

Job description
Principal Engineer - 35-40 hours per week - Hybrid with travel to site in Plymouth required (circa 2 days per month)

Day-to-day, Supporting the engineering capability of the new systems through the design lifecycle in accordance with the design process.

Key responsibilities will include:
  • Lead and manage one or more technical design packages ensuring requirements are met through the design process
  • Provide technical design guidance and review of sub-contract design to ensure compliance with specifications, technical regulations and standards
  • Collaboration across engineering functions and stakeholders to integrate designs within the overall facility layout and manage interfaces
  • Maintaining the engineering configuration of the design intent (change control)
Essential experience:
  • Defence, Nuclear, Oil & Gas or other highly regulated industry
  • Mechanical and/or Mechanical Process engineering background (fluid systems, hydraulics desirable)
  • Regulations, legislation and standards that are applicable to mechanical design and construction (including CDM Principal Designer responsibilities)
  • Solid understanding of engineering design and safety practices, tailored to the role, discipline and project needs
Desirable Experience:
  • Technical management of specialist sub-contract designers
  • Experience of working in BIM environments.
  • Awareness of project planning, project management and budgeting.
Qualifications:
  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering. Experience in lieu of formal education would be considered.
  • Chartered Engineer with membership of an accredited body (i.e. IMechE, IMarEST or IET) or working towards chartered status
