Job summary

AtkinsRéalis is seeking a Principal Engineer to lead the OLE First Principles design team. You will steer colleagues across disciplines, delivering basic design drawings, reports, and calculations to high quality. You will influence project outcomes, manage packages, and support bid activities with specialist input.

The role requires deep Eurocode 3 knowledge, CRE/CEM experience, and strong UK rail sector insight. A pre-employment medical may be required.

Qualifications

• In-depth knowledge of Eurocode 3 (BS EN 1993-1-1) for steel design.
• Experience as CRE/CEM or Technical Lead on projects.
• Strong understanding of UK Rail industry and client–contractor relationships.
• Ability to apply engineering judgement to non-standard construction problems.

• Lead and check basic design drawings, technical reports and calculations.
• Manage packages to completion within budget and programme.
• Provide specialist input to support bids and liaise with other specialists.

Job description

• As a Principal Engineer in our OLE First Principles (Basic Design) team
• Will lead talented colleagues known for diversity of thought, expertise and knowledge
• Will work independently and within larger multi-discipline workgroups, leading and managing packages to completion within budget and programme. Use your influence to deliver high-quality rail projects driven not just by profit but also by doing what’s right
• Will work in busy and niche First Principles design team in producing and checking basic design drawings, technical reports and calculation sheets from first principles, foundation designs, structural analysis, and presenting designs to the Client
• There will also be a requirement to provide specialist input from basic design perspective to support the OLE Practice Manager in bid
• A pre-employment medical and drug and alcohol screening will be required

In-depth knowledge of BS EN 1993-1-1 (Eurocode 3: Design of steel structures)The ability to apply first principles in the solution of problems where standardised techniques do not exist with the use of Mathcad, STAAD, Microstation CAD softwarePrevious experience of acting as a CRE/CEM or Technical Lead on ProjectsGood understanding of the Rail Industry in the UK and the Contractor Client relationshipDemonstrable understanding of mechanical design principles in overhead lineThe ability to apply engineering judgement in the assessment of effect lengths for non-standard constructionKnowledge of relevant International, National, Railway Group and Network Rail Standards on wind loading, foundation design,structural analysisThe ability to liaise effectively with other specialists such as FEA analysts and aerodynamicistsDemonstrable understanding of UK OLE systems and previous extensive experience in Designing, Checking DesignsExperience in the use of a structural analysis package such as Staad, ideally including a code-check post-processor
