Principal Ecologist (Nature, Ecology, and Biodiversity)

Overview

Embankment Group are recruiting on behalf of our client for a Principal Ecologist (Nature, Ecology, and Biodiversity) to join their expanding team in London. This is an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated professional to take a lead role in delivering projects that drive positive outcomes for biodiversity while supporting client needs across a range of sectors. The successful candidate will oversee complex ecological and biodiversity projects, contribute technical expertise, and mentor junior staff.

Responsibilities

As a Principal Ecologist, you will:

• Lead and deliver high-quality ecology and biodiversity projects from inception to completion.
• Manage and technically review ecological reports, including Preliminary Ecological Appraisals (PEAs), Ecological Impact Assessments (EcIAs), Habitat Regulations Assessments (HRAs), and Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) assessments.
• Undertake BNG calculations and mapping using QGIS and the Statutory Biodiversity Metric.
• Oversee and participate in ecological surveys, including habitat and bat surveys.
• Support and mentor junior team members, contributing to their professional development.
• Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams and provide client-facing consultancy support.
• Contribute to business development and project proposals.

Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you will need:

• Strong experience in ecological consultancy, with proven success in delivering complex biodiversity projects.
• Excellent understanding of ecological assessment processes, including BNG and protected species licensing.
• Proficiency in QGIS mapping and data analysis.
• Full membership of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM) or working towards Chartership.
• Strong report writing, client management, and project delivery skills.
• Experience in protected species surveys or licensing.
• A degree in ecology, environmental science, or a related discipline (MSc desirable).

Desirable Skills

• Experience managing or mentoring staff.
• Strong botanical or bat identification skills.
• Working knowledge of BREEAM Ecology Credit Assessments.
• Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel for fieldwork.

Day-to-Day

Your typical day may include:

• Leading project meetings with clients and internal teams to ensure project objectives are met.
• Conducting or overseeing ecological surveys and assessments in the field.
• Reviewing and preparing technical reports and biodiversity assessments.
• Mentoring junior team members and providing guidance on technical and professional development.
• Collaborating with other disciplines to deliver integrated solutions for clients.
• Engaging in business development activities, including preparing proposals and attending client meetings.
