Job summary

Carrington West in East London is seeking a Principal Planner (Development Management) to take ownership of complex applications with minimal supervision. The role will progress a caseload of strategic and often contentious proposals through to determination, balancing timely delivery with robust decision making.

The role includes strategic planning applications, pre-application enquiries, negotiation of planning obligations, appeals, and committee reports, while also supporting junior planners

Qualifications

• Five years' experience in development management.
• Experience handling strategic applications.
• Ability to manage complex and contentious cases independently.
• Strong report-writing skills and clear planning recommendations.
• Degree in planning or a related subject.

Responsibilities

• Progress a caseload of strategic and contentious proposals through to determination.
• Deliver timely decisions while maintaining robust, defensible outcomes.
• Handle pre-application enquiries and negotiate planning obligations.
• Manage appeals and associated casework, including committee reports.
• Support junior planners on complex cases and present balanced recommendations.

The Role

This is a delivery-focused role within a Strategic Applications team. We are looking for an experienced planner who can join the team and take ownership of complex applications with minimal supervision. The successful candidate will be expected to progress a caseload of strategic and often contentious proposals through to determination, balancing timely delivery with robust decision making.

The caseload is likely to include:

• Strategic planning applications and complex development proposals
• Pre-application enquiries
• Negotiation of planning obligations and contributions
• Appeals and associated casework
• Committee reports and presentations where required
• Supporting junior planners on complex cases

We are looking for someone who:

• Has at least five years' experience in development management
• Has demonstrable experience dealing with strategic applications
• Can manage complex and contentious cases independently
• Has strong report-writing skills and can make clear, balanced planning recommendations
• Can negotiate effectively with applicants, agents and other stakeholders
• Has a degree in planning or a related subject
