Job description

This is an exciting and challenging role as a Principal Civil & Structural Engineer (Team Manager) in a growing team of 130+ Civil & Structural Engineers and Designers. Our department covers a range of projects from Concept Studies through to Detailed Design, providing a variety of interesting work. Industries span Water, Transportation, Energy, Nuclear and Defence. Working in a multi‑disciplinary team, you will deliver civil and structural advice, analysis, calculations, reports and specifications. You will lead small projects and sub‑tasks from a technical perspective, communicate designs to BIM teams, other disciplines, construction personnel and stakeholders, and attend site visits, design reviews and client meetings mainly within the Northwest region. You will support and guide more junior team members, challenge and deliver value engineering solutions, and present confidently to clients.

Responsibilities
  • Technical input for projects and proposals; preparation, checking and approval of engineering documentation.
  • Organise discipline staff, allocate work and ensure delivery against plan.
  • Mentor and develop graduates and less experienced engineers.
  • Produce high‑quality civil & structural engineering deliverables to schedule, budget and client satisfaction.
  • Ensure compliance with national and international codes, legislation and company/client standards.
  • Implement company and client project policies and procedures.
  • Communicate effectively with other disciplines to ensure interfaces are clearly defined and correctly designed.
  • Communicate appropriately with other departments, project personnel, vendors and clients.
  • Assist in developing knowledge and skills of team members and in training less experienced colleagues.
  • Line‑manage a team of civil engineers, carrying out performance management, work allocation and administration of company line‑management processes.
More Specific Tasks
  • Define client requirements.
  • Plan and deliver project tasks undertaken by the civil & structural team.
  • Design new structures, assess historic structures and check and approve civil & structural documentation from subordinates.
  • Develop specifications and sub‑contract SOWs, including GI / SI contamination scopes.
  • Conduct optioneering assessments, define scopes of work, support estimates and business development.
  • Provide advice and guidance on specialist discipline matters relating to nuclear and energy sector requirements, regulations, latest technologies and industry best practice.
  • Support the PM in identifying change, progress reporting, tracking of issues, risks and resolutions.
Experience and Knowledge
  • Significant and proven UK experience in infrastructure at all stages of the project lifecycle.
  • Good knowledge of design working practices and installation requirements across a range of industries.
  • Extensive knowledge of UK legislation and standards.
  • Line management / team manager experience.
  • Awareness of risk identification, quantification, management and HSE requirements.
Desirable
  • Experience with new and historic structures, optioneering assessments, defining scopes of work, supporting estimates and business development.
  • Experience in leading small teams and supporting more junior engineers.
  • Knowledge and experience of common forms of contracts.
  • Project Management experience.
  • Requirements Management experience.
Qualifications – Essential
  • Minimum BEng Civil or Structural Engineering.
  • Chartership with ICE or IStructE.
  • CSCS or CCNSG.
  • Security Clearance.
