Job summary

WSP is seeking a Principal or Associate Tunnelling Engineer to join its Geotechnical and Tunnelling business. You will lead delivery of tunnel and shaft designs, coordinate multi-disciplinary teams, and contribute to business growth across markets and sectors.

The role involves overseeing reports, calculations and drawings, managing resources, and mentoring engineers, with opportunities to work on landmark projects globally. A Chartered Engineer qualification is preferred.

Qualifications

  • Experience managing tunnelling projects with multi-disciplinary design coordination.
  • Technical expertise in civil/structural and geotechnical engineering for tunnelling.
  • Chartered Engineer or equivalent registration with a relevant professional institution.
  • Experience with Eurocodes and other design standards.
  • Excellent report-writing and client liaison skills.

Responsibilities

  • Producing, checking and approving engineering deliverables including reports, presentations, design calculations and drawings for tunnels and shafts.
  • Collaborating with a dynamic team on projects from feasibility to construction.
  • Managing and delivering project work with robust financial management.
  • Assisting in management of team resources and allocation of project resources.
  • Mentoring and developing professional staff; providing client liaison, contractor and sub-consultant support; leading proposals.

We are currently looking for a Principal or Associate Tunnelling Engineer, to join our Geotechnical and Tunnelling business to contribute to the growth of the team and diversification into new markets and sectors.

A little more about your role…
  • Producing, checking and approving engineering deliverables including reports, presentations, design calculations and drawings associated with the design of tunnels and shafts.
  • Work as part of a dynamic team of tunnelling and geotechnical engineers on diverse projects ranging from micro-tunnels and trenchless solutions to major road and rail schemes at all stages of delivery from feasibility through to construction.
  • Effectively managing and delivering project work with robust project financial management.
  • Assisting in the management of team resources and allocation of appropriate project resources.
  • Managing, motivating, mentoring and developing professional staff.
  • Providing support in all aspects of project delivery including client liaison, contractors and sub consultants, public and statutory body consultation, quality control and management of specialists.
  • Carry out business development activities including preparation of technical proposals.
What we will be looking for you to demonstrate…
  • Experience in the management and delivery of tunnelling projects, ideally including multi-disciplinary design coordination, project management, engineering management, programming and preparing deliverables to a high technical level.
  • Technical expertise in civil/structural and geotechnical engineering with a demonstrable understanding of the underlying principles as applied to tunnelling schemes.
  • Consultancy experience with demonstrably good commercial awareness and relationships with clients & contractors.
  • Degree in Civil Engineering, Engineering Geology or Structural Engineering
  • Chartered Engineer or equivalent registration with a relevant professional institution.
  • Experience working with Eurocodes and other design standards
  • Experience of being part of or leading delivery teams that are effective in delivering short to medium term projects from inception to construction.
  • Excellent report-writing and client liaison skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office packages and familiarity with other software packages relevant to tunnelling and geotechnical engineering, such as CAD, Ground Movement Analysis and design packages.
  • The skills to check and critically evaluate the work done by others, be it drawings, calculations or reports, and have a proven track record of doing so.
