Responsibilities

• Lead structural engineering projects, managing technical delivery, resources, budgets and client expectations.
• Own calculations, drawings, reports and design documentation; review team work.
• Assess existing buildings, undertake site visits and produce appraisal reports.
• Develop practical solutions meeting design standards and CDM requirements.
• Mentor colleagues and support development toward professional qualifications.
• Prepare fee proposals and project cost estimates; identify opportunities and manage risks.

Principal / Associate Structural Engineer
Location: Birmingham
Salary: Up to £65,000 (negotiable)+ bonus and comprehensive benefits
Working pattern: Four days office-based, one day from home, with flexible hours
An expanding multidisciplinary engineering consultancy is seeking a Principal / Associate Structural Engineer to take a leading role in its Birmingham team.

Working closely with the Structures Director, you’ll lead projects, support the development of engineers and help grow the consultancy’s regional client base. There is a genuine opportunity to shape your responsibilities and progress towards Director level, with support from an accessible senior leadership team.

The business offers a collaborative environment where engineers are trusted to manage their time, take ownership of their work and build direct relationships with clients. There are no timesheets, reflecting a culture built around accountability and professional judgement.

The role

• Lead structural engineering projects, managing technical delivery, resources, budgets and client expectations.
• Take technical ownership of calculations, drawings, reports and design documentation, reviewing and coordinating work produced by others.
• Assess existing buildings, undertake site visits and produce clear appraisal reports.
• Develop practical solutions to complex engineering challenges, applying relevant design standards and CDM 2015 responsibilities.
• Mentor colleagues and support their technical development and progression towards professional qualifications.
• Prepare fee proposals and project cost estimates, identifying commercial opportunities and managing risks.
• Build relationships with existing and prospective clients, supporting business development and the growth of the Birmingham team.
• Present technical recommendations clearly to clients, contractors and other stakeholders.

What you’ll need

• Recent structural engineering consultancy experience in the Midlands.
• Chartered status, or close to achieving chartership, through the ICE or IStructE.
• Experience leading projects and taking responsibility for technical quality and delivery.
• Strong structural analysis, building appraisal and report-writing skills.
• Confidence using relevant design and analysis software, with familiarity with CAD and Civil 3D.
• The ability to manage client relationships, support colleagues and contribute to business growth.
• A master’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering would be advantageous.
