Job summary

A leading engineering firm seeks a Principal/Associate Mechanical Engineer to design mechanical distribution systems for data centres in Glasgow or Edinburgh. Responsibilities include leading system designs, producing technical specifications, and ensuring compliance with standards. Ideal candidates will have knowledge of data centre mechanical systems, possess Chartered status or are working toward it, and have experience in relevant UK and EU regulations.

Job description
Overview

Principal/Associate Mechanical Engineer – Data Centre sector – Glasgow or Edinburgh office. Focus on designing mechanical distribution systems from CHW, HVAC, Fuel to LTHW within Mission Critical Facilities.

Responsibilities
  • Support team in developing mechanical distribution system designs.
  • Provide advice to clients on mechanical system requirements.
  • Lead design of data centre mechanical systems and equipment.
  • Produce written reports of system options in design development notes.
  • Produce technical specifications for mechanical systems, ensuring compliance with relevant standards.
  • Ensure coordination with other disciplines including architects and structural engineers.
  • Produce calculations, technical/equipment specification documentation for tender.
  • Monitor installation of designed equipment/systems to ensure compliance with employer requirements, design specifications and all relevant safety codes.
Operational responsibilities
  • Able to work using own initiative with minimal supervision on all technical aspects of discipline.
  • Able to work under clear direction of the client and interpret project needs to meet full delivery needs.
  • Work in joint leadership capacity within MEP discipline team providing design and technical advice in WSP project manager capacity.
  • Complete detailed designs of mission critical facilities and all mechanical systems associated to data centres.
  • Consider feasibility of project specific to discipline and lead overall feasibility study.
  • Take responsibility for and direct others in production of detailed and performance specifications subject to review by colleagues prior to issue.
  • Review detailed design programme and ensure sufficient resource available to complete works.
Qualifications
  • Knowledge and experience in designing mechanical systems for data centres.
  • Chartered status (or working towards Chartered status) with CIBSE or IMechE or equivalent experience.
  • Technical MEP knowledge of relevant UK and EU regulations, design guides, etc.
  • Understanding of Uptime Institute Tier Classification System.
  • Flexible approach to meet demands of projects.
  • Working understanding of TAS of IES and Hevacomp to allow allocation/direct work on projects.
  • Working knowledge of RevitMEP or other 3D design software.
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD.
  • Able to work as part of a team and to effectively lead, direct and mentor individuals within and outside WSP team.
  • Experience of working to timescales and deadlines.
  • Must be able to obtain UK vetting level of Security Check (SC).
