Job description

Shape the Next Generation of the UK’s Rail Infrastructure

With a growing pipeline of rail infrastructure projects, including station upgrades, depot developments, operational buildings and wider railway estate enhancements, we are seeking a Senior Architectural Technologist to join our Architecture team in London. This role offers the opportunity to work directly on technically complex, safety‑critical and high‑profile rail schemes. If you enjoy detailed technical work, thrive in regulated environments and want to contribute to the modernisation of UK rail infrastructure, this is an ideal opportunity.

Purpose and Scope of the Role

This role is centred firmly on the technical delivery of rail‑related design work. You will be responsible for producing accurate, coordinated and compliant construction information that meets both statutory requirements and the stringent technical assurance and safety expectations of the rail sector. Working closely with multidisciplinary teams, you will develop architectural models, drawings, schedules and specifications that integrate effectively with structural, civil, MEP and specialist railway disciplines. Your day‑to‑day responsibilities will focus on technical detailing, design coordination, model development, document production and supporting efficient delivery across stations, depots, operational facilities and trackside buildings.

Your Impact in this Position

Your work will contribute directly to the clarity, buildability and compliance of rail‑sector design outputs. You will take responsibility for preparing, checking and coordinating technical information, responding to design queries, resolving clashes, and ensuring design intent is accurately translated into construction‑ready documentation. You will support project teams by maintaining consistent communication across disciplines, meeting programme requirements and managing your workload effectively. Over time, you will broaden your technical responsibilities and play a key role in maintaining high delivery standards across the Architecture team.

Technical Expertise in Architectural Technology (Rail Sector)
  • You will bring strong post‑qualification experience in producing detailed architectural design information within regulated environments. Experience working on rail projects – including station layouts, depot buildings, operational facilities or other railway assets – will be highly valuable. Proficiency in MicroStation Open Buildings Designer and Projectwise platforms is essential, as you will regularly use these platform to develop coordinated models and drawings aligned with rail workflows. Experience in Revit and BIM processes is useful, supporting projects where hybrid digital environments are deployed. A thorough understanding of UK Building Regulations, construction detailing and relevant technical standards is essential to ensure accuracy and compliance.
Project Delivery and Technical Coordination
  • Your focus will be on delivering accurate, coordinated and timely technical outputs. You will work closely with structural, civil, MEP and rail‑specific engineering teams to ensure design information aligns, solving issues collaboratively and maintaining consistency across all documentation. Experience working with HS2, Transport for London and Network Rail standards, CDM requirements and technical assurance processes will support your ability to operate effectively. You will manage your workload efficiently, support project reporting needs and contribute to meeting programme commitments.
Communication and Stakeholder Engagement
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills will enable you to produce clear technical documentation, support design workshops, undertake site visits and respond effectively to project queries. You will work collaboratively with clients, operators, engineers and internal project teams, ensuring information is well‑structured, clearly presented and delivered on time. While this is not a leadership‑focused role, your experience will support a positive and cooperative team environment and you may provide informal guidance to junior colleagues when needed.
Innovation, Detail and Technical Problem‑Solving
  • You will bring a methodical approach to technical problem‑solving and a strong eye for detail. You will support improvements to digital workflows, technical efficiency and sustainable design considerations within the rail environment. Your ability to identify issues early, propose practical solutions and maintain accuracy in a highly regulated sector will be central to the quality of your delivery.
Commercial Awareness and Client Focus
  • You will understand how technical decisions influence programme, cost and project risk. You will support fee proposals, tender content and project‑delivery strategies by contributing accurate technical inputs. Your approach to design delivery will reflect a clear understanding of client requirements and the commercial context of rail projects.
Mandatory Requirements

You must be proficient in MicroStation Open Building Designer and able to produce accurate, detailed design information to a high standard. You will bring strong organisational skills, the ability to manage competing priorities and a solid understanding of construction legislation, compliance and industry standards. Experience within transport, industrial or rail‑related environments will provide a strong foundation for delivering technically sound outputs in safety‑critical contexts.

Experience in station design, depot buildings, operational railway facilities or wider rail estate projects will be highly advantageous. Familiarity with Network Rail standards, CDM responsibilities, technical assurance processes and the implications of the Building Safety Act will strengthen your ability to support regulated rail environments. Experience with Revit, BIM workflows and complex project coordination will also be beneficial.
