Job description

As a Senior Civil Engineer in our Transmission business, your day is filled with dynamic and impactful activities that drive the success of electrical transmission infrastructure projects. You start your day by reviewing design plans and ensuring they align with project specifications and regulatory standards. Collaboration is key, so you engage with multidisciplinary teams, including electrical engineers, architects, and construction managers, to integrate civil and structural elements seamlessly into the overall project design. Throughout the day, you lead technical discussions and design review meetings, where you provide valuable insights and guidance to ensure that all design outputs meet the highest quality standards. You take a hands‑on approach to problem‑solving, whether it’s conducting site visits to identify potential constraints or using computational design software to refine structural plans. Your role also involves managing the flow of design information and documentation, ensuring that all stakeholders have access to accurate and up-to‑date information. You liaise with consultants and contractors, providing clear instructions and managing timescales to keep the project on track. As a leader in value engineering, you continuously seek opportunities to optimise cost, schedule, quality, and constructability, ensuring that the project delivers maximum value. In addition to technical responsibilities, you play a crucial role in change management, assessing contractor value proposals and communicating the implications of design changes to all parties involved. Your day is a blend of strategic planning, technical expertise, and collaborative teamwork, all aimed at delivering successful and innovative infrastructure solutions.

Responsibilities
  • Lead the Civil and Building design elements of electrical transmission infrastructure projects.
  • Support procurement and construction teams to deliver projects technically.
  • Conduct value engineering to optimise cost, schedule, quality and constructability.
  • Perform design governance checks and manage the flow of design information.
  • Ensure compliance with contract requirements, standards and legislation.
  • Interface and coordinate with other design and construction disciplines.
  • Chair design review and technical clarification meetings.
  • Draft Scope of Services and Works documents.
  • Undertake site visits to identify constraints and resolve construction issues.
  • Manage change control and communicate implications of design changes.
Qualifications
  • Experience in civil and structural design with architectural knowledge.
  • Proficiency in earthworks design and specification for highway works.
  • Ability to utilise computational frame design software.
  • Expertise in reviewing calculations and ensuring economic design.
  • Knowledge of consenting processes and planning conditions.
  • Understanding of M&E design concepts and multidisciplinary works.
  • Familiarity with fire design and preservation of life and asset protection.
  • Working knowledge of British and European codes and Building Regulations.
  • Good communication skills and qualification in Civil, Structural, or Architectural Engineering.
  • Chartered Engineer status or equivalent experience.
