Job summary

AtkinsRéalis UK Limited is seeking a Principal Active Travel Engineer to lead technical delivery of active travel projects across Scotland and the UK. Based in Scotland, you will guide engineers, mentor early-career staff and develop client relationships within a multidisciplinary team.

The role emphasizes driving design excellence, coordinating with public sector clients and contributing to bids, frameworks and research initiatives to advance active travel standards.

Qualifications

• Chartered Engineer or equivalent required.
• Significant experience in planning, design and delivery of active travel infrastructure.
• Experience integrating walking, cycling, public transport, green infrastructure and traffic management into complex urban environments.
• Strong knowledge of Cycling by Design, Designing Streets, Inclusive Mobility and the National Roads Development Guide.
• Experience leading multidisciplinary design teams and coordinating technical inputs.
• Experience managing client relationships and supporting business development activities.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.

Job Description Overview AtkinsRéalis is at the forefront of active travel design and delivery, leading the way through design standards, guidance production, research, innovation and the development of tools and processes that support the delivery of high-quality active travel infrastructure across Scotland and the UK. Our Active Travel team in Scotland is continuing to grow, and we are seeking a Principal Active Travel Engineer to play a leading role in the development of our business, people and projects. Based in any of our Scottish offices, you will lead the successful delivery of active travel projects across Scotland and the wider UK, working closely with local authority and public sector clients through our established framework commissions and strategic relationships. Working within multidisciplinary teams, you will provide technical leadership, support business growth, develop client relationships and help shape the future direction of our active travel offering. You will also contribute to design guidance, innovation and research projects that enhance our industry-leading reputation. We are seeking a proactive and enthusiastic Professional with significant experience in the active travel field. An eye for detail and confidence to challenge decisions and concepts in a constructive and collaborative way are key attributes for this role. The ideal candidate will be comfortable working with clients and stakeholders at all levels across the UK and able to work collaboratively with an existing team of highly motivated active travel professionals.

Your role

About you Essential criteria

• Chartered Engineer, Chartered Transport Planning Professional or equivalent.
• Significant experience in the planning, design and delivery of active travel infrastructure projects.
• Demonstrable experience integrating walking, cycling, public transport, green infrastructure and traffic management solutions into complex urban environments.
• Excellent understanding and application of relevant guidance and standards including Cycling by Design, Designing Streets, Inclusive Mobility and the National Roads Development Guide.
• Experience leading multidisciplinary design teams and coordinating technical inputs.
• Experience managing client relationships and supporting business development activities.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.

Desirable criteria

• Full UK driving licence.
• Experience developing and mentoring technical teams.
• Project and programme management experience.
• Experience preparing contracts, specifications and procurement documentation.
• Experience undertaking public and stakeholder consultation.
• Knowledge of AutoCAD and Civil 3D.
• Cycling experience and understanding of user requirements.
