Job description

Primary Teacher - Fixed term until 29/06/2027
Sciennes Primary School

Salary: £36,159 - £54,453 (pro rata for part time)
Hours: 20 per week, 52 weeks per year

Working pattern: Wednesday, Thursday & Friday

At Sciennes we are committed to ensuring every child grows up loved, safe and respected. We want every child to receive an education which develops their personality, talents, mind and body so they can reach their fullest potential (Article 28 and 29 UNCRC). Our skilled staff team, engaged families and motivated learners work together to ensure that we live by our school motto of Believe, Achieve.

Our school first opened its doors in 1892. Now in 2026, we provide high quality learning experiences for over 650 children in our Victorian building, newly built annexe designed with Passivhaus technology, and in St Leonard's, our associated Nursery, based in the Pleasance.

Our school ethos is based on equality. We are one of very few schools who have achieved a Gold Rights Respecting School Award twice. We hold the LGBT Silver Charter's School Award which is the highest accolade that can be achieved by a primary school. Our longstanding collaboration with the Children's Parliament has resulted in our learners contributing to a three year project on Sustainability. We have entered into a partnership with SCOTDEC who are strengthening our approach to anti-racist education.

Our children's success is a key priority for us. We have very high attainment in Literacy and Numeracy. Our approach to planning is based on stage collaboration which is then tailored to meet the needs of individual learners. Our Learning and Teaching is based on the key principles of Engage, Explain, Experience and Evaluate.

We are looking for a class teacher to work alongside our Primary 5 team. The post is 0.56 and you will be working Wednesday - Friday across two classes.

This post is regulated work with children and/or protected adults under the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act 2007. The preferred candidate will be required to join the PVG Scheme or undergo a PVG Scheme update check. Where an individual has spent a continuous period of 3 months or more out with the UK in the last 5 years, an Overseas Criminal Record Check will be required. You will be required to provide this check. An unconditional offer of employment and commencement in the post will be subject to the outcome of both these pre-employment checks being deemed satisfactory.

Salaries will be in accordance with the Scheme of Salaries and Conditions of Service for Teaching Staff in School Education.

We are committed to a diverse and inclusive workforce where everyone feels valued and able to be their best. We particularly encourage applications from women for senior roles, as well as people from minority ethnic backgrounds, people with disabilities or neurodivergent people, care experienced people, carers and LGBT+ people across all levels of the organisation, all of whom are currently underrepresented. All applicants will be considered fairly based on skills and experience. Disabled and care-experienced applicants who meet the minimum job criteria will be guaranteed an interview.
