Job summary

Deploy Recruitment Group is seeking an experienced Senior Primary Design Engineer to lead and deliver high-quality primary engineering designs for HV substations and power infrastructure projects. You will mentor junior engineers and collaborate with project managers, clients and multidisciplinary teams in a hybrid or remote setup.

With a degree in Electrical Engineering and substantial HV substation design experience (33kV–400kV), you will ensure designs meet UK and international standards.

Qualifications

• Degree in Electrical Engineering or related field.
• Significant HV substation primary design experience (33kV–400kV).
• Knowledge of UK/intl standards and utility requirements.
• Proven ability to lead design tasks and review others' work.
• Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
• Chartered Engineer status or working towards (desirable).

Responsibilities

• Lead the design and development of primary engineering solutions for HV substations.
• Produce and review primary design deliverables (layouts, GA drawings, equipment specs, reports).
• Ensure designs meet standards, client specs, and safety requirements.
• Provide technical guidance, checking, mentoring to junior engineers.
• Interface with clients, contractors and internal stakeholders throughout project lifecycle.
• Support project planning, cost estimates and risk assessment.
• Contribute to continuous improvement of design processes and standards

Job description

We are seeking an experienced Senior Primary Design Engineer to lead and deliver high-quality primary engineering designs for HV substations and power infrastructure projects. Working for the specialist power engineering arm of a FTSE 250 company, you will play a key role in technical delivery, mentoring junior engineers, and working closely with project managers, clients, and multidisciplinary teams.

This role is available on a hybrid or remote basis, offering flexibility while remaining closely connected to project teams and clients.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the design and development of primary engineering solutions for HV substations and associated infrastructure
• Produce and review primary design deliverables including layouts, GA drawings, equipment specifications, and technical reports
• Ensure designs comply with relevant standards, client specifications, and safety requirements
• Provide technical guidance, checking, and mentoring to junior engineers
• Interface with clients, contractors, and internal stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle
• Support project planning, cost estimates, and risk assessment
• Contribute to continuous improvement of design processes and standards

About You

• Degree-qualified in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline
• Significant experience in primary design within HV substations (e.g. 33kV-400kV)
• Strong knowledge of UK / international standards and utility requirements
• Proven ability to lead design tasks and review the work of others
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
• Chartered or working towards Chartered Engineer status (desirable)
