Job summary

Assystem is seeking a Pressure Compliance Mechanical Engineer to lead the compliance and structural integrity work for HPC-related projects. You will interact with project managers, design teams, regulators, and suppliers to ensure robust pressure system conformity throughout all lifecycle stages.

Travel to Europe may be required. The role supports the Quality Function and requires experience with RCC-M/ASME, and a strong safety culture.

Qualifications

• Degree in Mechanical Engineering with relevant experience in pressure systems.
• Knowledge of RCC-M and ASME codes is preferred.
• Experience in regulated nuclear or power industries is advantageous.

Responsibilities

• Support development and maintenance of pressure systems compliance and structural integrity requirements for assigned work scope.
• Ensure project policies and contracts are implemented to meet pressure systems safety case requirements.
• Provide arbitration and technical decisions on pressure systems regulation and integrity compliance for the programme.
• Manage pressure compliance activities in support of the Programme Pressure Compliance Lead.
• Maintain SQEP status to comply with nuclear baseline requirements.

Job Purpose / Overview

The Pressure Compliance Mechanical Engineer will report to the Pressure System Completions and Integration Manager and will take responsibility for managing the pressure systems compliance and structural integrity requirements on behalf of a specific scope identified by the Pressure System Completions and Integration Manager and Pressure Compliance Lead, ensuring appropriate implementation and compliance to meet HPC project needs.

The role holder will support the implementation of pressure systems compliance and structural integrity requirements within specific projects, on behalf of a specific programme. They will support the project managers in ensuring compliance and delivery for HPC.

The role will require good technical and organisational capabilities to effectively interface with Project Managers and relevant stakeholders in the programme, the ONR, third party organisations and support the supply chain in delivery.

Their team and role will act as the single point of contact for pressure systems compliance and structural integrity requirements – through all phases of the project and for the various project policies, for their allocated scope.

The role may require trips abroad (mostly mainland Europe).

Contextual Information

Hinkley Point C is one of the largest power generation projects in the world, and the first nuclear station for a generation to be built in the UK.

Within HPC, the Quality function provides the project with expertise in quality management, surveillance and pressure systems conformity assessment of the plant, through all stages of the development lifecycle.

The Pressure Compliance organisation sits within the Quality Function and is responsible for developing and delivering plant compliance for pressure systems structural integrity, conformity assessment and safety. The team interacts closely with many different stakeholders, including project managers, engineering design, manufacturing/installation companies and regulators.

Principal Accountabilities

• Support the development and maintenance of the pressure systems compliance and structural integrity requirements for their appointed work scope (normally specific projects within a programme).
• Ensure that project policies, processes and contracts are implemented and delivered to the right quality to manage pressure systems regulation and structural integrity safety case requirements.
• Responsible for arbitration and technical decisions on HPC’s behalf in regards to pressure systems regulation and structural integrity compliance for their programme.
• Manage on behalf of the Programme Pressure Compliance Lead the pressure systems compliance and structural integrity requirements.
• Maintain personnel SQEP status to support nuclear baseline requirements.

Dimensions

• Ensuring delivery by third parties on behalf of the project.
• Develop strong working relationships within HPC, regulators and the supply chain.
• Be able to credibly advise projects and programmes on technical requirements and act as the technical decision maker in regards to pressure systems compliance and structural integrity activities as per their delegation of authority; escalating as necessary through the Pressure Compliance Organisation.
• Have the credibility to engage on a day to day basis with the senior project managers and project managers to ensure the key requirements of pressure compliance and project delivery constraints are balanced.
• The post holder may also be required to support other parts of the project from time to time as requested by their line management, and their experience.

Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications & Experience

Knowledge

• Managing structural integrity and pressure regulation compliance requirements in the nuclear industry.
• Mechanical engineering design and operation of pressure equipment specifically built to RCC-M or ASME codes.
• Working in a multidisciplinary and matrix environment.
• Working with regulators and supply chain companies to coach through the pressure compliance process.
• Knowledge of regulatory requirements relating to plant in the UK would be a plus.

Skills

• Ability to be focussed on the requirements of the project, to show a ‘can-do’ approach to work and to work independently or with others to achieve the team goals.
• Ability to credibly interact with various stakeholders and to influence the internal teams and contractor partners, working in matrix organisation.
• Have awareness of technical limitation and be able to involve others when required.

Qualifications

• Degree in Mechanical Engineering
• Chartered Member of appropriate professional institution would be a plus (IMeche Preferred), or capable of being chartered.

Experience

• Relevant Experience in large scale project or asset management within a highly regulated industry sector as Power Generation, Nuclear Industry or Oil &Gas / Petro-Chemical.
• Relevant experiences in relation with the engineering topics associated to pressure systems manufacture, installation, structural integrity and conformity assessment.
• Experience in multi-cultural industrial projects.
