A leading NHS Trust in Tooting is seeking enthusiastic individuals for the Pre-registration Trainee Pharmacy Technician position. This two-year training program combines hands-on experience in various pharmacy settings with college-based studies, leading to a registered Pharmacy Technician qualification. Successful candidates will gain valuable practical skills, with numerous opportunities for career progression upon qualification. Qualifications

  • GCSE in Maths at grade A-C (9-4) or equivalent.
  • GCSE in English Language at grade A-C (9-4) or equivalent.
  • GCSE in Science (Biology/Chemistry) at grade A-C (9-4) or equivalent.
  • GCSE in one other subject.
  • Must meet apprenticeship eligibility criteria.

Responsibilities

  • Dispensing and labelling medication.
  • Providing counselling to patients on how to use prescribed medication.
  • Taking drug histories and carrying out medicine reconciliation.
  • Assessing the suitability of patients’ own medicines for use.
  • Making the final accuracy check on prescriptions.
  • Preparation & maintenance of cleanrooms used to produce injectable medication.
  • Dispensing and compounding of injectable medication.
Job description

Are you keen to earn while you learn and train as a pharmacy professional? If so, we are looking for enthusiastic, and self‑motivated individuals with good interpersonal skills to join our team of Pre‑registration Trainee Pharmacy Technicians (PTPTs) for our September 2024 cohort at St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Successful completion of the qualification will enable the PTPT to register with the GPhC as a registered Pharmacy Technician.

The Pharmacy Department is highly regarded in the Trust and has 270 staff members. The department is friendly, forward‑thinking and constantly expanding with opportunities for personal development and post‑qualification training and development options. Once qualified there are a variety of options for career progression as a Pharmacy Technician within the department.

The postholder will follow a structured training programme at St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, whilst studying and working towards a General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) recognised qualification.

Practical skills will be obtained through planned rotations throughout the hospital pharmacy department including Inpatient Pharmacy, Outpatient Pharmacy, Satellite Dispensing Units, Wards, Pharmacy Stores and Distribution, Procurement and Clinical Trials, Technical Services and Community Pharmacy.

The training programme will combine the practical experience gained in the work environment with the underpinning knowledge of a college‑based qualification over a two‑year period. This involves attending college one day a week, completing knowledge‑based assignments and producing a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate work‑based competencies.

Qualification Entry Criteria
  • GCSE in Maths at grade A‑C (9‑4)/Maths Level 2 Functional Skills or equivalent
  • GCSE in English Language at grade A‑C (9‑4)/English Functional Skills Level 2 or equivalent
  • GCSE in Science (Biology/Chemistry) at grade A‑C (9‑4) or equivalent
  • GCSE in one other subject
  • Must meet apprenticeship eligibility criteria

Candidates who do not hold a sufficient Science GCSE must be able to demonstrate experience working in a pharmacy environment as a pharmacy services assistant for a minimum of 2 years and/or hold a level 2 qualification in Pharmacy – these candidates will be required to complete a Science screening assessment prior to interview. All other entry requirements remain the same as stated above.
