Job Summary

We are seeking a motivated and compassionate Staff Nurse to join our dynamic Pre‑Operative Assessment Clinic (POAC) team. This role is vital in ensuring patients are safely and effectively prepared for elective surgery. You will be responsible for carrying out comprehensive pre‑operative assessments, identifying potential risks, and coordinating necessary investigations to optimise patients ahead of their surgical journey. The successful candidate will work closely with multidisciplinary teams including anaesthetists, surgeons, and administrative staff to provide high‑quality, patient‑centred care. If you are a registered nurse with strong communication skills, attention to detail, and a proactive approach to patient care, we would love to hear from you. The successful candidate will be expected to cover a range of shifts currently 6 days a week. We require you to have an RGN qualification and up to date NMC registration. Please note a full Disclosure Barring Service application will be required for these posts.


Main Duties of the Job

Practice autonomously and be responsible and accountable for safe, compassionate, person‑centred care. Ensure a high standard of patient care is delivered in an effective and efficient manner, reflecting the values and ethos of The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. Be responsible for assessing care needs of patients. Planning, implementation and the evaluation of these programmes without direct supervision.

Job Responsibilities


  • Work at all times in accordance with the NMC Code of Professional Standards of Practice and Behaviours, revalidation and relevant professional guidelines, independently / autonomously and at times without direct supervision.

  • Be accountable for their own professional actions and those delegated to others.

  • Ensure accurate assessment of patient care needs, development of care plans, implementing and evaluating care based on the patient needs.

  • Achieve and maintain competence in identified mandatory and statutory training; develop and maintain clinical competencies, skills and knowledge which relate to the area of clinical practice (i.e. venepuncture, cannulation, ECG, urethral catheterisation and any other relevant duties).

  • Respond to patients, relatives and carers concerns as they arise and take remedial action as required.

  • Take charge of the practice setting as required.

  • Assume responsibility for undertaking tasks delegated by the nominated line / shift coordinator. This may include representing the ward at meetings, link nurse responsibilities, audit, clinical governance initiatives and supervision and role competency assessments for unregistered staff and students.

  • Contribute to the development of service and quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient experience and outcome and ensure standards of care are monitored and maintained within the organisation.

  • Delegate appropriately to and supervise the work of other staff registered or unregistered and students.

  • Assist with the induction and orientation and subsequent development of junior staff within the ward or department.

  • Maintain accurate nursing records ensuring all documentation is completed accurately and promptly.

  • Administer medications as described by local policy and in line with the NMCs standards for medicines management.

  • Adhere to organisational policies and procedures.

  • In accordance with individual patient care, and utilising appropriate computer software and/or monitoring equipment, on a daily basis undertake and record patients observations.


Person Specification

Essential – Qualifications and Training:



  • NMC/Equivalent Registration


Essential – Experience:



  • Recent clinical placement or practical experience within a healthcare setting.

  • Evidence of ongoing professional development.


Desirable – Experience:



  • Orthopaedic Experience.

  • Recent Acute Hospital Experience.


Essential – Knowledge:



  • Ability to use own initiative and make sound clinical judgements.

  • Core skills such as ECG, Cannulation, Venepuncture, Catheterisation and IV Therapy.


Essential – Skills:



  • Excellent communication skills, verbal, written and listening.

  • Self‑motivated to develop personal learning and skills.

  • Able to work under pressure.
