Job summary

OHG PLC Elective Surgery Hub is seeking a Registered Nurse passionate about delivering excellent patient care to support patients through their elective surgical journey. The role requires current NMC registration and experience in acute orthopaedic and spinal surgery, including pre-operative assessment.

Responsibilities

• Provide pre-operative assessment and care for elective orthopaedic and spinal patients.
• Support patients through their elective surgical journey with excellent care.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure patient safety and quality care.
• Educate patients and families about procedures, recovery and discharge planning.
• Adhere to infection prevention and clinical documentation standards; assess and manage clinical risks.

Job description

You will be a Registered Nurse who is passionate about delivering excellent patient care and supporting patients through their elective surgical journey.

You will have

• Current NMC registration.
• Experience working within an acute surgical environment.
• Experience in pre-operative assessment or surgical nursing.
• Experience caring for patients undergoing major orthopaedic surgery including: Total hip replacement.
• Total knee replacement.
• Revision arthroplasty where clinically appropriate.
• Experience or knowledge of spinal surgery including: Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion (ACDF).
• Cervical decompression.
• Lumbar decompression.
• Lumbar discectomy.
• Spinal fusion procedures.
• Ability to assess patients holistically and identify clinical risks.
• Excellent communication and patient education skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.

You will have knowledge and understanding of

• Pre-operative assessment pathways.
• Elective orthopaedic and spinal surgical pathways.
• ASA classification and patient suitability assessment.
• Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) principles.
• Medication assessment and peri-operative medication management.
• VTE risk assessment and prevention.
• Infection prevention screening requirements.
• Blood investigation and ECG requirements.
• Consent processes and patient information.
• Recognition and escalation of clinical concerns.
• Clinical documentation standards.
• Patient-centred care and shared decision-making.

Desirable

• Immediate Life Support (ILS) qualification.
• Experience within an elective orthopaedic or spinal pre-assessment service.
• Experience contributing to clinical audits and quality improvement.
• Experience supporting service development.
