Be part of our new Alternative Provision

Bath College is developing an exciting new Alternative Provision (AP) at our Somer Valley Campus, providing a supportive, inclusive and engaging learning environment for young people aged 14-16 who may benefit from an alternative to their current school-based provision.

We are looking for an experienced and committed Alternative Provision SEND & Learner Support Lead to play a key role in the day-to-day support of our learners and the coordination of the wider support around them.

This is a varied role combining direct learner support with SEND and inclusion coordination. Our Alternative Provision operates across five afternoons each week and the successful candidate will work directly alongside learners during these sessions, providing approximately 15-18 hours of learner-facing support each week.

The remaining hours will be used to coordinate support, liaise with parents/carers, schools, commissioners and other professionals, contribute to reviews and transition planning, and ensure that each learner has the right support in place to engage and progress successfully.

Why join Bath College?

This is an opportunity to be part of a new provision from the beginning and help shape how we support young people who may need a different approach to education.

You will join a supportive college community committed to inclusion, safeguarding and creating opportunities for every learner to achieve their potential.

Bath College offers a competitive salary and excellent employee benefits, alongside opportunities for professional development and the chance to contribute to the continuing development of our Alternative Provision and wider inclusive practice.

The Role

You will be a consistent and trusted presence for the young people attending the provision, working alongside teaching staff during sessions to support engagement, learning, wellbeing and positive behaviour.

Outside of the taught sessions, you will take a lead role in coordinating the support surrounding each learner and maintaining strong communication between the College and the young person's wider network.

  • Providing direct support to learners across the five afternoon AP sessions each week.
  • Supporting learners with SEND and/or additional needs to access teaching and participate fully in their programme.
  • Building positive and consistent relationships with young people, helping them to develop confidence, independence and resilience.
  • Working closely with teaching staff to identify and implement appropriate individual support strategies.
  • Coordinating information relating to learners' SEND, additional needs and agreed support.
  • Acting as a key point of contact for parents/carers, schools, commissioners and relevant external professionals.
  • Contributing to learner reviews, transition planning and progression planning.
  • Monitoring and contributing to information relating to attendance, engagement, progress, wellbeing and support needs.
  • Supporting learners through their transition into Bath College and preparing them for their next stage of education, training or employment.
  • Working closely with the College's SEND, safeguarding, curriculum and wider support teams.
  • Ensuring that the learner's voice is central to their support and future planning.

About You

We are looking for someone who enjoys working directly with young people but who is equally confident coordinating the wider support that enables them to succeed.

You will have experience of supporting young people with SEND and/or additional needs and understand that learners entering Alternative Provision may have had very different experiences of education.

You will be approachable, organised and able to build effective relationships with young people, parents/carers and professionals. You will be confident contributing to multi-agency discussions and communicating with schools and commissioners while always keeping the needs and interests of the young person at the centre.

Experience within SEND, Alternative Provision, education, youth work or a related setting would be particularly welcomed.

Above all, we are looking for someone who combines warmth and empathy with high expectations and who believes that, with the right support and opportunities, young people can successfully re-engage with education and progress to positive next steps.
