Job Summary
We would like to offer a Band 7 to 8a psychologist development post working at Peterborough City Hospital, within Cystic Fibrosis and General Paediatrics, helping to provide parity of esteem between Physical and Mental Health.
The post is offered at band 7 and involves the transition to a band 8a psychologist, with the expectation that you will have fulfilled and evidenced the competency requirements following a transitional period (usually 12‑18 months). You will be appointed a preceptor (supervising psychologist) who will support your development and hold regular reviews of progress, to ensure that you can produce a portfolio evidencing your ability to fulfil the requirements and competencies of a band 8a psychologist.

Job Responsibilities
- To provide specialist psychological assessments of clients referred to the psychological medicine service, using complex data from tests, self‑report measures, rating scales, observations and interviews with clients, family members and others involved in the client’s care.
- To develop psychological formulations of presenting problems that integrate information from assessments within a coherent framework drawing upon psychological theory and evidence and incorporating interpersonal, societal, cultural, biological factors and health impacts on the family.
- To develop and implement plans for formal psychological treatment and/or management of a client’s mental health problems, based on an appropriate conceptual framework and employing evidence‑based methods across hospital and community settings.
- To be responsible for implementing a range of psychological interventions for individuals, carers, families and groups, adjusting formulations and maintaining provisional hypotheses.
- To evaluate and decide on treatment options, considering theoretical and therapeutic models and complex factors such as historical and developmental processes.
- To do this in the context of health and surgical interventions.
- To exercise autonomous professional responsibility for assessment, formulation, treatment and discharge of clients and manage a caseload in line with service guidelines.
- To provide specialist psychological advice, guidance and consultation to multidisciplinary professionals, contributing to client formulation, diagnosis and treatment plans.
- To supervise qualified, trainee and assistant psychologists and other professionals undertaking psychological work.
- To contribute to a psychologically based framework of understanding and care for all clients of the service across designated areas.
- To undertake risk assessment and risk management for individual clients and advise others on psychological aspects of risk, in line with Trust and inter‑agency policies.
- To act as care coordinator, ensuring provision of an appropriate care package, coordinating psycho‑social care, arranging reviews and communicating effectively with the patient, their family and the network of care, monitoring progress.
Person Specification
Education / Qualifications – Essential
- Doctoral level training in clinical psychology, including models of psychopathology, clinical psychometrics, neuropsychology, two or more distinct psychological therapies and lifespan developmental psychology accredited by the BPS or equivalent.
- Registered with the Health and Care Professions Council.
Education / Qualifications – Desirable
- Chartered Clinical Psychologist.
- Further training in systemic therapy, paediatric neuropsychology and/or trauma.
Experience – Essential
- Experience of specialist psychological assessment, formulation and treatment across inpatient, community, primary care and outpatient settings.
- Experience working with a wide variety of client groups throughout the life course and presenting a range of clinical severities, maintaining professionalism amid distressing or abusive situations.
- Experience of applying clinical psychology in different contexts.
Experience – Desirable
- Experience of teaching, training and/or supervision.
- Experience working with families.
- Experience working with children in a paediatric medical setting.

- Skills in complex psychological assessment, formulation, intervention and management requiring sustained concentration and analytical judgement.
