Job Summary

Friar Gate Surgery is seeking an experienced Practice Nurse to join our friendly team.

We are looking for someone who can provide a full range of nursing services, ideally working between 25 and 35 hours per week.

The role will involve all aspects of practice nursing, including cervical screening, baby immunisations, recording immunisations given abroad, family planning, and chronic disease management. You will work closely with our three GPs to deliver high‑quality patient care.

Main Duties of the job

Patient Care: Assist and support the nursing team with clinical tasks like wound care, cytology, childhood immunisations, recording immunisations given abroad, medicals, and chaperoning. Conduct pathology requests, and manage LTCs including Diabetes, Asthma, COPD, and the other Quality and Outcome Framework Reviews.

Clinical & Admin Duties: Follow protocols, maintain equipment and clinical rooms, ensure stock rotation, and manage vaccine orders. Support flu home visits, keep mandatory check records, input and management of patient vaccination records, and assist with administrative processes.

Confidentiality: Safeguard patient data and uphold practice policies on sensitive information.

Health & Safety: Implement infection control protocols, manage PPE and hand hygiene, handle specimens, and oversee sterile environments. Train on safety measures, monitor equipment, and address hazards.

Equality & Diversity: Promote inclusive behaviour, respect patient rights, and act in a non‑judgemental manner.

Development & Quality: Participate in training, personal development, performance reviews, and audits. Work on team and individual effectiveness, and ensure high standards of care.

Communication: Maintain clear, adaptable communication with patients, carers, and colleagues.

About Us

At Friar Gate Surgery we have 2 GP Partners, 1 salaried GP, a midwife and an FCP. We serve a population of 5,000 patients and provide staff car parking facilities.

Responsibilities

Clinical Skills

  • Long‑term condition management: Asthma (including peak flow readings and spirometry), COPD, Diabetes (reviews including foot checks and care planning), Hypertension, Atrial Fibrillation, Heart Failure, and CHD Management, CKD Management.
  • Screening and health checks: BP checks, height, weight, BMI, urinalysis, and smoking status; New Patient checks; NHS Health Checks; Mental Health Reviews; Learning Disability Reviews.
  • Women's health and family planning: Cervical cytology; General family planning services.
  • Procedures and wound care: Wound care; Suture and clip removal.
  • Travel health: Advice and preparation; Travel Immunisations; NHS Vaccinations and immunisations.
  • Additional procedures: Ear syringing.
  • Clinical Responsibilities: Administer injections under an individualised prescription or PGD; Request pathology tests; Assist GPs with minor surgery and family planning as required; Maintain cold chain procedures.
  • Infection Prevention and Control: Apply infection control measures; Universal hygiene precautions; Collection and handling of laboratory specimens; Segregation and disposal of waste materials; Decontamination of instruments and clinical equipment; Reporting and treatment of sharps injuries; Managing blood and body fluid spillages; Ensuring safe disposal of clinical waste and PPE; Support patients and colleagues in adopting effective infection control measures; Lead or participate in audits.
  • Emergency Preparedness: Be proficient in anaphylaxis and resuscitation techniques; Support the maintenance of emergency equipment and attend updates.
  • General Duties: Maintain cleanliness of equipment; Stock and rotate items; Chaperone and assist patients; Ensure cleanliness of treatment rooms.
  • Administrative Tasks: Order and manage stock (Health Promotion Literature, District Hospital supplies); Input and management of patient vaccination records; Participate in administrative systems; Advise management on potential problems; Attend and contribute to Practice meetings.
  • Patient Care and Outreach: Perform any other delegated duties appropriate to the role.
  • Education and Research: Participate in research projects; Engage in education and training of students; Assist in induction of practice staff.
  • Liaison and Professional Development: Maintain effective communication with other agencies; Participate in continued education.
Qualifications
  • NMC registered nurse.
Essential Experience
  • Experience working in a GP Practice.
  • Experience working in primary care.
  • Experience working within a nursing team.
Desirable Experience
  • Experience using SystmOne, Accurx, Arden's Templates.
  • Experience working with deprived populations.
  • Delivery of clinical audit.
  • QOF management.
