Job summary

Colchester Medical Practice is seeking an experienced practice nurse to join the team at the Wimpole Road Site. Flexible hours from 22.5 to 37 per week; role covers health assessments, treatments, and chronic disease clinics.

The candidate should hold an NMC PIN, a nursing degree, and GP nursing modules are desirable. Strong patient-centred care and clinical skills are essential.

About the Role

Colchester Medical Practice has a fantastic opportunity for an experienced practice nurses to join our team on a part time or full time basis. This role will be predominately based at our Wimpole Road Site. The minimum hours per week would be 22.5, ranging up to 37.

• Undertaking health assessments, administering medication and treatments, and performing diagnostic tests.
• Providing and evaluating a range of health interventions to ensure that patients’ health and social care needs are met.
• General health and well-being promotion as well as creating individual, person-centred plans for patients with, or at risk of, a long term condition.
• Managing and treating long-term conditions, in line with national and local policies and the practice needs.
• Reviewing medication for therapeutic effectiveness, in accordance with evidence-based practice as well as national and practice protocols; working with patients to support their adherence to prescribed treatments.
• Prioritising health problems and intervening appropriately, to assist the patient in complex, urgent or emergency situations, including initiation of effective emergency care.
• Supporting and managing the health needs of women presenting for sexual health and contraception, and cervical cytology consultations.
• Implementing, and participating in, vaccination and immunisation programmes for both adults and children, including patients travelling abroad.
• Meeting the needs of patients presenting for opportunistic wound care.
• Hypertension review and management.
• Running asthma, COPD and diabetes clinics and reviews.
• New patient and health checks.

About the Candidate

• A relevant nursing degree.
• Current NMC registration with an active PIN.
• Ideally having completed the CNO002 Discovering a Nursing Career in General Practice module or the Fundamentals of Practice Nursing course (General Practice Nurse Foundation Programme)
• Competence to undertake asthma, COPD and diabetic clinics and reviews, holding relevant certificates.
• Evidence of clinical skills and experience in treatment room consultation, phlebotomy, ECG recording, screening, management of long-term conditions, cervical cytology sampling, vaccinations and immunisations, assisting with minor surgery, dressing and wound care, and recording spirometry.
• Compassionate manner with an empathetic approach and demonstrable kindness in all aspects of your work. The successful candidate will value the dignity of our patients, their relatives and carers, as well as their colleagues at the practice.
• Knowledge, and experience of its application, in supporting long-term conditions.
• Insight and understanding of current issues in nursing and the wider NHS.
