Job description

Thepost-holder is responsible for attending to patients who wish to be seen by a healthcare professional, diagnosing and treating patients presenting with minor illness, seeing and advising people in respect of their continuing medical and nursing needs.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder is primarily responsible for the diagnosis and treatment of minor illnesses, health checks, cervical smears and routine vaccinations.

We are a busy, high-achieving, well‑organised practice, operating in two locations, with 10000+ patients registered at Connaught Square Practice and 3500+ at Westbourne Green Surgery. We are open 6 days a week and provide different services that cater to our patients' needs. We are easily accessible being based in Central London.

IMPORTANT: We provide Enhanced Access at Connaught Square Practice (6.30-8pm on weekdays and 8:30am-4pm on Saturdays). Our expectation is that the hire would be willing to work Enhanced Access on weekdays, and the occasional Saturday (when cover is required for our usual Nurses who work Saturdays).

Job responsibilities

Job Responsibilities:

  • Diagnosis and treatment of patients presenting with minor illness
  • Health checks, screening and education
  • Chronic disease reviews
  • New patient health checks
  • Height/weight monitoring
  • BP monitoring
  • Urinalysis
  • General health advice, including dietary advice
  • Cervical smears
  • Dressings
  • Contraception
  • Routine immunisations and vaccinations
  • Removal of sutures/clips
  • Baby immunisations
  • Provide general and specific health screening for practice patients in accordance with practice guidelines and protocols, with referral to other members of the primary and secondary healthcare team as required.
  • Organise and coordinate the provision of nursing services for the practice, including the delegation of duties to other members of the nursing team as appropriate.

The post-holder will participate in the training programme implemented by the Practice as part of their employment, including participation in an annual performance review, maintaining a record of their own personal and/or professional development, taking responsibility for their own development and demonstrating skills and activities to others.

Person Specification
Experience
  • Registered Nurse with current NMC and active PIN.
  • Post registration study in topics relevant to general practice.
  • At least two years' experience in a similar role.
  • Excellent literacy and numeracy skills.
  • Demonstrable understanding of the needs of the patient and role of a Practice Nurse.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients and colleagues, both in person and via telephone.
  • Experience of working in primary care / a GP practice.
  • Experience of dealing with patients whose circumstances may make them vulnerable.
  • Experience in delivering quality outcomes of people's care and treatment, especially among older people, people living with long-term or chronic conditions, including people living with a Learning Disability, people in the last 12 months of life and people experiencing poor mental health.
