Job summary

Morson Edge is seeking an aspiring Operations Technician to join a major UK energy infrastructure business in Northern Ireland. You will gain hands‑on experience across gas turbine and power generation systems, with structured training and assessments to become a fully competent operator.

Qualifications

  • Completion of a recognised apprenticeship or equivalent training within an engineering discipline is preferred.
  • Alternatively, candidates with A‑level qualifications combined with relevant industrial experience in plant operations, maintenance or engineering environments will be considered.
  • Relevant technical qualifications in mechanical, electrical or process engineering would be advantageous.

Responsibilities

  • Operate, monitor and control power generation units and associated auxiliary systems safely and efficiently to meet system demand, operational targets and environmental requirements.
  • Support the start‑up, synchronisation, loading, de‑loading and shutdown of generating units in accordance with operational procedures and safety requirements.
  • Carry out routine plant inspections, identifying defects, abnormalities and operational issues, and accurately recording findings within maintenance management and station reporting systems.
  • Monitor main plant and auxiliary systems during normal operation, taking appropriate corrective action within defined limits to maintain safety, reliability and efficiency.
  • Maintain accurate operational logs, shift handover records and plant performance information to support effective communication between Operations and Maintenance teams.
  • Work closely with engineering and maintenance personnel to identify operational issues and support effective resolution of plant problems.
  • Assist with plant isolations and ensure equipment is made safe for maintenance activities in accordance with company safety rules and authorisation procedures.
  • Develop competency in the operation of high‑voltage electrical systems, including remote switching activities across 275kV, 110kV, 11kV and 17kV networks.
  • Support operational testing, inspections and routine maintenance activities while ensuring all records and documentation are maintained accurately.
  • Analyse plant performance data, identify opportunities for improvement and support initiatives to enhance operational efficiency.
  • Develop knowledge and competency in operational communication protocols, including grid system reporting, market communications and relevant industry procedures.
  • Participate in incident response activities and develop the skills required to support emergency response procedures across the station.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues across Operations, Maintenance, Engineering and wider business functions to support safe and reliable plant performance.
  • Participate fully in the company development programme, completing training, assessments and competency requirements to achieve Operations Technician status.
