Job summary

The University of Exeter invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate or Fellow to join the Department of Engineering at Penryn Campus, Cornwall. The role focuses on developing a novel observation-based machine learning ocean forecasting system, in collaboration with the UK Met Office and Oshen, with emphasis on uncertainty quantification.

Qualifications

• PhD in oceanography, ML, statistics, mathematics or engineering (or equivalent).
• Ability to work within established research programmes and communicate progress.
• Experience with uncertainty quantification methods is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Design and implement uncertainty propagation methods in Python for a 3D machine learning forecasting pipeline.
• Develop adaptive spatial sampling algorithms and verify the framework using real data and autonomous vessel deployments.
• Lead simulation development, interpret model outputs, and publish findings.
