Job summary

Royal Mail in Portsmouth is recruiting a Postie (Postal Delivery Driver) on a fixed-term 6‑month contract. You’ll deliver letters and parcels across Portsmouth, working 35 hours per week on a rotating shift, including weekends, 08:30–15:30 (and Sundays 12:30–19:00).

You’ll sort mail at the delivery office, drive a Royal Mail van, and deliver on foot in your local area. Expect outdoor work in all weather, building relationships with customers, and handling up to 10 kg+ mailbags.

Qualifications

• Valid UK manual driving licence with up to 6 penalty points.
• Ability to walk long distances and lift 10 kg+ mailbags.
• Deliveries in all weather and outdoor work.
• Willingness to work weekends and rotate shifts.

Working hours: 35.00 hours per week – working 5 days in 7 across Monday - Sunday – 08:30 to 15:30/Sunday 12:30 to 19:00*

What To Expect

This role is physically demanding and fast-paced:

• Walking long distances (up to 12 miles / 20,000+ steps)
• Driving a Royal Mail van daily

• Busy, time-pressured days, especially during peak periods

About You

We’ll provide full training, a uniform, and an iconic red van. You’ll need:

• A full manual UK driving licence (maximum 6 penalty points, registered to your current name and address)
• Willingness to drive a Royal Mail van daily and able to pass a driving assessment
• Physically fit and comfortable walking long distances, climbing stairs / hills, and lifting / carrying 10kg+ mailbags
• Reliable and self-motivated
• Strong organisation and resilience in a busy environment
• Customer-focused, with pride in delivering great service
• Comfortable working outdoors and independently
