The Department of Physical Sciences and Engineering at Royal Holloway, University of London invites applications for a three-year post-doctoral research associate position starting January 2027.

The project RE-FLUX investigates a new rhenium isotope proxy for petrogenic CO2 emissions; the appointee will perform isotope measurements on experimental and field samples and contribute to fieldwork in the UK and Europe.

Job description

Starting Salary is £41,374 per annum (including London Allowance)

*This is the expected starting salary for this post however appointment at a higher point may be made for candidates who demonstrate exceptional skills and experience relevant to the role.

Applications are invited for the post of post-doctoral research associate in the Department of Physical Sciences and Engineering. The postholder will join the NERC-funded project ‘Calibrating the rhenium isotope proxy for petrogenic CO2 emissions from rock weathering (RE-FLUX)’ led by Professor Alex Dickson and Professor Rebecca Fisher, which aims to advance a new proxy for geological emissions of carbon dioxide to the oceans and atmosphere from rock weathering. The post-holder will be required to undertake isotope measurements of experimental and field samples, engage in fieldwork in the UK and Europe, work with project partners and promote the results of the research through publication and at UK and international conferences. The postholder will have access to a range of initiatives to support their independent career development, including memberships of the Centre of Climate Ocean and Atmosphere (COCOA) and the RHUL Early Career Researcher Academy, and access to specific research training through the RHUL Researcher Development Programme.

Applicants should have demonstrable research knowledge and experience in geochemistry, stratigraphy and the global carbon cycle and weathering processes. Prior experience working with non-traditional isotopes, molecular geochemistry and/or Earth-System modelling would be beneficial. The post is for three years beginning in January 2027.
