Job summary

Dishoom Permit Room Portobello Road seeks an Assistant General Manager on a maternity cover to lead a busy site and manage a large team. You will partner with the General Manager to uphold Dishoom's standards of hospitality and service excellence across shifts.

You’ll coach team members, drive guest satisfaction, and ensure smooth daily operations while supporting business growth and staff development during this maternity cover period.

Qualifications

• Requires 1+ year as Assistant General Manager or similar in a busy restaurant.
• Strong leadership and coaching abilities with a focus on developing the team.
• Commercially savvy and able to drive revenue and service standards.
• Flexible with 5-day operation including weekends and shifts.

What to expect:

• Free team meals every shift, plus all the Chai you can drink!
• Competitive salary per year inclusive of tronc. We pay on a monthly basis.
• A full-time role working across 5 days, Monday - Sunday availability required.
• A weekly changing rota provided at least 6 days in advance.
• We’re an all-day dining Cafe, meaning our teams work a variety of daytime and evening shifts (not the usual always late nights!)
• Access to our award-winning training programmes and support. We focus on your development from day one and proudly promoted 326 Dishoom-walles last year!
• The usual number of days holiday a year - paid for at your usual rate. Our sites are closed Christmas Day and Boxing Day, and if you have children, we’ll provide one extra day to take them to their first day at school.

Like any restaurant operation, our Babus' (Managers) are imperative to the success of our business. We genuinely couldn’t do what we do without them!

Permit Rooms can get busy; circa 3,000 covers per site per week, with demanding shifts & first-class service execution. We are lucky enough to have (quite regularly) people waiting to dine with us.

However, at Dishoom on a busy evening shift, there is the support of multiple other Babus, plus 20-30 Dishoom-walles, all fully focused in their roles to support one another. Also, you are empowered to do the right thing when no one is looking. We never want to deter from our service standards, and aim to pursue unreasonable hospitality to our guests every day through Seva.

As an Assistant General Manager:

• You have been working as an Assistant General Manager in a busy restaurant environment for at least the past year. You want to be part of a company that can help you flourish and become the best you can be.
• Working in partnership with the General Manager, your big-hearted approach will make coaching and developing other members of the team a natural focus.
• You are ready to be the General Manager’s right arm; a natural leader, assuming responsibility to ensure the restaurant runs as it should in their absence.
• You’re commercially savvy and bring ideas to the table, eager to develop your overall awareness and understanding further.
• First-class service is your priority; always prepared to seek tough feedback, working closely with the General Manager to ensure you raise the standards every day and exceed everyone’s expectations.
