Job Summary

We are currently looking for porters in the Estates and Facilities Directorate, based at the Leicester Royal Infirmary, the Glenfield Hospital, and the Leicester General Hospital. The portering service is a 24 hour service including nights and weekends, and is essential to the smooth running of a hospital. Porters keep everything moving, from patients to parcels.

We are looking for an innovative individual with the drive and ambition to work with a group of staff within the department. The successful candidate will need the passion and drive to motivate individuals to deliver excellent patient care. The University Hospitals of Leicester trust is one of the busiest in the UK and candidates must be able to work in a high‑pressure, fast‑paced environment.

Main Duties

Porting duties vary across patient portering, post room, linen room and waste management:

  • Transport patients on wheelchairs, beds and trolleys between departments.
  • Collect and deliver units of blood, gas cylinders and other items.
  • Frank mail, collect and deliver post throughout the hospital and sort post for collection.
  • Fill trolleys with clean linen for wards, handle curtain changes and uniform orders.
  • Operate electric vehicles to collect and deliver large waste bins, segregating them for collection.

Responsibilities

Training:

  • Be competent to use electronic devices specific to the role after training.
  • Have a good knowledge and understanding of the service requirements before and after training.

Patient/Customer Service:

General Duties:

  • Respond to tasks allocated through the tasks management system using hand‑held radios.
  • Convey patients by wheelchair, trolley, bed etc., assisting clinical staff.
  • Collect and clean wheelchairs, trolleys and beds.
  • Deliver clean linen to wards using trolleys, electric vehicles or tugs.
  • Collect dirty linen from wards and departments.
  • Perform general duties, including delivery of beds, materials, equipment and other removal requests.
  • Transport deceased persons in compliance with Trust policies and procedures.
  • Ensure all waste is collected, transported and disposed of according to Trust policies and national legislation.
  • Transport blood and blood products to and from the Pathology Department.
  • Deliver and collect medical notes from wards and departments.
Person Specification

Training & Qualifications (Essential):

  • Attend Trust induction and any relevant training required for the position.

Experience (Essential):

  • Carry out instructions and duties as detailed in the job description.
  • Achieve NVQ Level 2 (or equivalent) in cleaning support services and customer care within 3 years.
  • Positive approach to customer care and a desire to enhance service provision.

Experience (Desirable):

  • Previous experience working within a healthcare environment.
  • NVQ Level 2 (or equivalent) in cleaning support services and customer care.

Skills (Essential):

  • Understand routine work processes requiring on‑the‑job training and induction.
