Job description

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated Specialty Doctor/Clinical Fellow in Breast Surgery to work with our friendly and proactive expanding team. We are looking for an experienced doctor in Breast Surgery. This is a 1 year fixed term, full time post of 40 hours per week with no out‑of‑hours on‑call commitments. Successful candidate is expected to work independently with own clinics and theatre sessions, depending on surgical skills and building toward a totally independent practice with consultant support when needed.

The department offers a full service of screening and symptomatic breast cancer care, with access to full range of radiological support including MRI biopsy and AI diagnostic facilities. The theatre suite offers all facilities to support the whole range of oncoplastic breast surgery, from localisation of non‑palpable lesions to various oncoplastic techniques and reconstruction, with full support of microsurgery colleagues in plastic surgery. The department is part of the North East of Scotland training programme with full training support and facilities in one complex of hospitals.

There is active trial recruitment and research projects, with a full teaching programme.

The successful candidate is expected to be flexible to cover clinical work in the new patient one‑stop clinic, review clinics and in‑patient cover. There is an on‑call commitment during working hours for breast abscess referrals and referrals from other specialties, which will be shared among middle‑grade doctors. Regular theatre session assistance as well as independent sessions, depending on experience, will be required, developing own skills in breast cancer surgery toward an independent practice. Participation in the weekly MDT and screening clinic is expected, alongside assisting consultant colleagues with result clinic while they have other commitments or are on leave.

Candidates working toward higher exams, CESR and having special development requirements are encouraged to discuss their plans as early as possible with the head of department to facilitate their progress.

Regular teaching and training session attendance, QI projects, M&M and CME attendance.

Full registration with a licence to practise with the GMC is required (licence to practise must be in place prior to starting in post). For more information visit www.gmc-uk.org.
