Job summary

Norfolk & Suffolk Foundation NHS Trust is seeking a Plumbing & Heating Engineer to provide planned, routine, and reactive maintenance across sites in Norfolk and Suffolk. The role focuses on repairing and maintaining plumbing, heating, and mechanical systems, with fault diagnosis, inspections, and safety compliance.

The position involves on-call duties and teamwork within a multidisciplinary maintenance team to support a safe healthcare environment for patients and staff.

Qualifications

• Two years’ experience in plumbing or mechanical engineering environments.
• Recognised plumbing or mechanical qualification (City & Guilds, NVQ, BTEC or equivalent).
• Full UK driving licence to operate Trust vehicles.
• Ability to work at heights and in confined spaces.
• Desirable: ACS gas qualification and NHS healthcare environment experience.
• Must undergo DBS check.

Responsibilities

• Provide planned, routine, and reactive maintenance across NHS Trust sites.
• Repair and maintain mechanical, plumbing, and heating systems and equipment.
• Identify faults, diagnose issues, and carry out necessary repairs.
• Conduct routine inspections to ensure safety and compliance.
• Participate in on-call rotations for emergency maintenance outside hours.

Provide planned, routine, and reactive maintenance services across Norfolk & Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust sites.

Repair and maintain a wide range of mechanical services, plumbing systems, heating systems, and equipment.

Identify faults, diagnose problems, and carry out necessary repairs.

Conduct routine inspections to ensure buildings and facilities remain safe and compliant.

Ensure all maintenance work complies with health and safety regulations and relevant legislation.

Participate in a rotational on-call team to provide emergency maintenance services outside normal working hours.

Collaborate with the multidisciplinary maintenance team to maintain a safe environment for patients, staff, and visitors.

Work primarily in Norwich, supporting sites across Norfolk and Suffolk.

Requirements

• Minimum of two years’ experience demonstrating technical versatility and flexibility.
• Recognised plumbing or mechanical engineering qualification, such as:
  • CITB/EITB-recognised apprenticeship of at least three years in plumbing or mechanical engineering.
  • Hire Plumbers
  • City & Guilds Mechanical Engineering Parts 1, 2 and 3.
  • Plumbing NVQ Levels 1, 2 and 3.
  • BTEC, ONC in Mechanical Engineering, or an equivalent qualification.
• Full UK driving licence to operate Trust vehicles.
• Ability to work at heights using ladders, scaffolding, and access platforms, as well as in confined spaces.
• Flexibility, enthusiasm, self-motivation, and the ability to work effectively within a team.
• Desirable: Experience working in a mental health or secure hospital environment.
• Desirable: Accredited Certificate Scheme (ACS) gas qualification.
• Gas Safe registration is preferred but not essential, as relevant training may be provided to the right candidate.
• Must undergo a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.
