Job summary

Flagship Pioneering is seeking exceptional computational scientists and engineers for a 6-month co-op from January 2027 to June 2027. You will join a machine learning team to tackle impactful challenges in AI for the life sciences, collaborating with interdisciplinary researchers on model development and data-driven solutions.

You will build models, run experiments on diverse datasets, and communicate results to a multi-disciplinary audience.

Qualifications

• Fluency in Python and experience implementing ML methods with standard tools and packages (e.g., PyTorch, JAX).
• Readiness to deep dive into biology/physics/chemistry of the platform companies we build.

This position is open exclusively to current Northeastern University Co-Op students. Work Period: January 2027 to June 2027. This is a full - time, 40 hours per week position with 5 days in office. What if...you could use AI to impact an entire ecosystem of life science companies?

Pioneering Intelligence (PI) is a Flagship initiative focused on developing and harnessing AI/ML based platforms for innovative applications in life sciences and beyond. Welcome to Flagship Pioneering Co-Op Program for the cohort dreaming big and taking courageous leaps. You'll join fellow peers across our ecosystem of companies and learning firsthand how we build first-in-category companies. The Role

Our Co-ops will work on challenging problems in machine learning and computational science for the life-sciences. They will work closely with a team of interdisciplinary scientists consisting of ML and domain experts to advance the state-of-the art in machine learning and contribute to our ongoing efforts. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a fast-paced, highly dynamic entrepreneurial environment. We work on problems and use techniques like:

• Generative models for biomolecular design including flow matching, diffusion, and language models.
• Self-learning agentic systems.
• Biophysical simulation.

Key Responsibilities

• Work with an interdisciplinary team of scientists to build models, organize data and deliver computational solutions.

Basic Requirements

• Fluency in Python and experience implementing ML methods with standard tools and packages (e.g., PyTorch, JAX).
• Readiness to deep dive into the biology/physics/chemistry of the platform companies we build

Preferred Requirements

• Publications or experience in CS, ML, Computational Chemistry/Biology or a similar computational field.
• Experience with generative models, natural language processing, graphical neural networks, reinforcement learning, or similar.
• Familiarity with software development, including git and public cloud computing resources (e.g. AWS, GCP, Azure).

The pay range for this role is $25 - $35 per hour. This role is a short-term engagement that is not eligible for health and welfare benefits.
