Job Title - Pilot Plant Technician

Location - Supercritical North, Wilton, Teesside, UK

Type - 12 month contract

Salary - £144-176/day

Hours - Nominal 8 hour days Mon - Fri, however this role will require flexibility to work assigned shifts, which will include evenings, weekends, and public holidays. (Specific shift premiums/details can be discussed during the interview)

The Opportunity

Supercritical is looking for a Pilot Plant Technician to join our pilot plant operations and development team, based in Wilton. The role will suit an applicant with a good background in plant‑based experimentation. This is an opportunity to join an exciting and purpose‑driven startup.

You will join an exciting and fast moving company that is intent on disrupting the energy industry and enabling a net zero future.

What you’ll do
  • Conducting high‑quality testing to support product development
  • Assembly and disassembly of test hardware and test equipment
  • Adhering to test procedures to meet research and development requirements
  • Assisting in the improvement of testing procedures and processes to enhance the quality and consistency of testing
  • Calibrating and maintaining equipment
  • Meeting testing deadlines as per the plan
  • Reporting any variances or issues that affect test results
  • Collaborating with a team to achieve goals
  • Strictly following all safety and operating procedures on site
  • Coordinating and communicating work with the wider team
  • Be actively involved to support the project management of all works on our Pilot Plant
  • Support on site contractors and teams
  • Provide support to the Pilot Plant Manager and act as cover during holidays when needed
  • Provide support to develop and roll out working procedures, site standards and other live working documents/systems
About you

Ideally, you will:

  • Experience in plant‑based research/testing
  • Strong analytical skills, problem‑solving abilities, and a team‑oriented attitude
  • Experience with high pressure and high temperature fluid systems, with knowledge of supercritical water conditions being an advantage
  • Experience in maintaining and operating test stands or plants, with either a mechanical or electrical, controls and instrumentation focus. You will be expected to be hands‑on and willing to address and resolve issues
  • A passion for product development and a commitment to a net‑zero environment
  • Strong organisational and communication skills
  • Proactivity and self‑motivation
  • Knowledge of plant risk assessments & health and safety protocols
  • Ability to understand and execute standard operating procedures
  • Familiarity with unexpected results or issues
  • Be willing to undertake formal or informal training to close any skills or knowledge gaps needed to fulfil the role
Desirable
  • Experience in electrolyser cell system testing
  • A degree in science or engineering, either from full time study or apprenticeship
  • Basic knowledge of data logging and hardware control
  • Experience in automation, high‑throughput experimentation, data science, programming, and research development
  • Experience in one or more of the following disciplines, mechanical, electrical or instrumentation
  • Experience working at an operational facility, exposure to permit to work systems/LOTO
  • Knowledge of HAZIDs and HAZOPs
  • Experience with Plant P&ID’s, SOP’s and SDS’s
  • Training in first aid and fire warden for a plant/workshop environment
  • High‑level understanding of electrochemical technology and equipment for troubleshooting purposes.
