Job description

We are looking for a dedicated Phlebotomist to work 30 hours per week, rotating between the Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen sites. Applicants should be prepared for a rota basis of 7:00‑17:30 Mon‑Fri, 8:00‑13:00 Sat‑Sun, and Bank Holidays.

Responsibilities
  • Perform venepuncture in busy outpatient and ward settings, ensuring timely and efficient sample collection.
  • Collect blood and potentially hazardous samples in appropriate containers, following infection control procedures (e.g. ANTT).
  • Secure patient consent, verify identification, and accurately label samples in line with local and national guidelines.
  • Despatch samples to the laboratory using the internal vacuum pod system or by liaising with porters.
  • Work independently with patients, managing anomalies and reporting them to senior staff as required.
  • Maintain a clean, stocked workstation and handle contaminated bodily fluids such as urine, faeces and sputum safely.
  • Communicate effectively with doctors, nurses and ward staff regarding request forms, patient fasting status and medication schedules.
  • Provide empathy and support to patients, including those with needle phobias or disabilities, and respect patient privacy.
  • Respond to telephone enquiries and transfer calls to the appropriate colleague.
  • Participate in training lectures, study days and workshops, staying current with departmental, hospital and national policies.
Qualifications
  • NVQ Level 2 / GCSE or equivalent.
  • Ability to work as a team member and independently under supervision.
  • Adaptability to various working situations.
  • Desirable: previous experience with venepuncture.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively with individuals of diverse backgrounds.
