We are seeking a skilled Phlebotomist with expertise in both adult and paediatric venipuncture to join our team at HJE. The ideal candidate should have experience drawing blood from a variety of patients, showing professionalism, kindness, and careful attention to detail in an outpatient setting.

Main duties of the job
  • Perform venipuncture for blood collection in adult and paediatric patients.
  • Accurately label and handle specimens.
  • Ensure patient comfort and safety during procedures.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment.
  • Collaborate with healthcare staff to ensure high-quality patient care.

Job responsibilities
  • To perform venipuncture in accordance with the Hospital Venipuncture Policy, by confirming patient identity using at least two identifiers (e.g., name and date of birth).
  • Check the request form and confirm test requirements before sample collection.
  • Provide clear explanations of procedures to patients.
  • Address patient concerns and ensure their comfort and dignity during the process.
  • Collect other specimens as required (e.g., urine, swabs), ensuring correct containers are used.
  • Label all specimens correctly at the collection point.
  • Follow universal precautions and use appropriate PPE.
  • Dispose of sharps and biohazard waste correctly.
  • Prepare specimens for laboratory transport following handling and storage procedures.
  • Ensure timely delivery to the lab to maintain sample integrity.
  • Check and maintain phlebotomy equipment and stock levels.
  • Report any equipment faults or shortages.
  • Ensure all specimens are recorded in the Outpatient Specimen Collection Log Book.
  • Maintain confidentiality and comply with data protection regulations.
  • Work closely with nursing staff, laboratory, and the administrative teams to coordinate care.
  • Escalate any unusual findings, patient concerns, or issues promptly.
  • Participate in ongoing training, competency assessments, and updates on protocols and best practices.
Person Specification
Job Criteria
  • Certificate in adult & paediatric Phlebotomy (or equivalent)
  • Experience in drawing bloods from adult and paediatric patients.
  • Excellent communication skills and a compassionate approach to patient care.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Previous experience in a private healthcare setting preferred.
