The University of Exeter’s Department of Biosciences, in partnership with the Marine Biological Association (Plymouth, UK), invites applications for a 3.5-year ERC-funded PhD studentship starting between February and September 2026. The studentship covers Home or International tuition fees and provides a tax-free stipend of at least £20,780 per year, full-time.

The project investigates antagonistic interactions between phytoplankton and bacterial pathogens using novel single-cell methodologies,

Qualifications

  • First or Upper Second Class UK Honours degree in biological sciences, microbiology, marine biology or plant sciences.
  • Interest in microbial ecology and environmental microbiology.

Responsibilities

  • Study antagonistic phytoplankton-bacteria interactions using novel single-cell methods.
  • Bridge lab model systems with natural phytoplankton blooms in the field.
  • Train in microscopy, meta-omics and microbial physiology techniques.
