Job Summary

We are offering an opportunity for Pharmacy Technicians to join our Clinical Team. This essential role provides the opportunity for a Pharmacy Technician to put their skills into practice, working with innovative technology and systems, whilst also continuing to build further skills for future career progression. You will participate in the medicines reconciliation process, supply of medication during Inpatient stay, support effective and timely discharge and patient counselling. This role offers many opportunities to interact with patients and their carers, as well as the wider multidisciplinary team.

We actively encourage interest from Pharmacy Technicians across all sectors and have a wealth of experience within the team to support transition from other sectors of pharmacy towards hospital pharmacy.

We welcome applications from pre‑registration Trainee Pharmacy technicians completing their qualification within the next three months. Entry level will be at a Band 4 (unless already Band 5) – previous experience, qualification and accreditations will be considered. Candidates will be regraded to Band 5 once in‑house accreditation completed.

Main Duties
  • We provide excellent education and development opportunities including gaining a national accreditation in Medicines Management, Medicines Reconciliation and Final Accuracy Checking.
  • Improve the quality of care to patients in Clinical and Ward areas by means of an efficient medicines management system. This will include the use of patients' own drugs (PODS), providing Inpatient supply dispensing, near‑patient discharge systems and counselling patients about their medicines.
  • Support the Pharmacy team in the delivery of the departmental medicines management strategy via provision of technical Ward based Pharmacy Services.
  • Rotate around defined clinical areas according to experience.

Location: Addenbrookes Hospital – Division B, Hills Road, Cambridge, CB2 0QQ

Contract: Permanent, Full‑time (flexible working)

Pay: £27,485 to £37,796 a year p.a. (pro rata)

Experience (essential)

  • Recent pharmacy experience within a hospital ward or dispensary setting, a community pharmacy or GP practice.
  • Entry level will be at a Band 4 – previous experience, qualification and accreditations will be considered.

Desirable Experience

  • Experience of medication history taking and medicines reconciliation.
  • Knowledge and experience of audit methodology.
  • Experience of patient counselling.
  • Experience of using an electronic prescribing and medicines administration system.

Knowledge (essential)

  • Clinical and information governance guidelines.
  • Formulary management and application.
  • Awareness of NICE, NLRS, MHRA/CSM and involvement in implementation of relevant guidance.
  • Current legislation regarding Controlled Drugs.
  • Current policies and legislation regarding safe and secure storage of medicines.

Desirable Knowledge

  • Knowledge and experience of audit methodology.

Qualifications (essential)

  • Completion of a GPhC‑accredited course, GPhC‑recognised qualification or a GPhC‑approved apprenticeship pathway for Pharmacy Technician initial education and training (minimum qualification NVQ3 Pharmacy Services, BTEC Pharmaceutical Science or CGLI/Apoth Hall pre‑1985 certificates or equivalent).
  • Registered with the GPhC as a Pharmacy Technician.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Member of APTUK.
  • Post‑registration qualification in Pharmaceutical medicines.
  • Management and/or patient consultation skills (e.g., Certificate in Medicines Management for Pharmacy Technicians; patient counselling skills or equivalent).
  • Medicines management accreditation (National Framework or in‑house recognised equivalent confirmed at interview).
  • Medicines reconciliation accreditation (National Framework or in‑house recognised equivalent confirmed at interview).
  • Accredited Checking Pharmacy Technician (ACPT).
