Job description

The White House Surgery are looking for an experienced Pharmacy Technician. Pharmacy Technicians play an important role, complementing clinical pharmacists, community pharmacists and other members of the surgery team. Pharmacy technicians core role responsibilities will cover clinical, technical and administrative categories.

Main duties of the job

The purpose of the role is to lead improvements to maximise safe, cost effective best practice in prescribing to improve the quality of patient care. The post holder will help patients to get the best from their medicines by switching medications to agreed and approved protocols, improving repeat prescribing processes in General Practice, including promotion of repeat dispensing and online ordering, minimising clinical risk and aiming to reduce wasted medicines. In addition, the post holder will be responsible for encouraging the development of better understanding of the principles of medicines optimisation throughout the practice teams, and promoting good practice in line with therapeutic developments, carry out medicines optimisation tasks including effective medicine administration (e.g. checking inhaler technique), supporting medication reviews and medicines reconciliation where required.

You will also manage shared care protocols and liaise with other team members for more complex patients.

You will also support initiatives for antimicrobial stewardship to reduce inappropriate antibiotic prescribing locally.

Provide training and support on the legal, safe and secure handling of medicines including the implementation of the Electronic Prescription Service (EPS) and Electronic Repeat Dispensing (ERD)

Also supporting practice reception teams and prescription clerks in streaming general prescription requests.

We are a friendly and busy General Practice approximately 12,000 Patients.

We are a well-established and dynamic team comprising of 3 GP and 1 non-GP Partner, Salaried GPs, ACPs, Pharmacy Technician, Physiotherapist, Practice Nurses and Healthcare Assistant who are well supported by an experienced administrative team.

We are part of the Folkestone, Hythe and Rural Primary Care Network (PCN) encompassing 7 local practices providing additional services to meet our patients needs in a holistic manner.

Job responsibilities

Job Description - Practice

  • Acting as triage and support for repeat medicines queries
  • To undertake medication-related audit
  • Support in clinical guidance around specialist only, unlicensed and not recommended drugs
  • Review high cost items
  • Review high quantity dressing requests
  • Review discharge notifications that have medication alteration
  • Dealing with out of stock queries
  • Dealing with medicines related complaints
  • Where possible dealing with "difficult" prescriptions that need action by the GP
  • Help clinicians work through Medicines Optimisation Scheme every year.
  • Dealing with MHRA alerts and Supply Shortage of medicines.
Person Specification
Qualifications
  • High standard of education with excellent literacy and numeracy skills.
  • Is registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).
  • Meets the specific qualification and training requirements as specified by the GPhC criteria to register as a Pharmacy Technician.
  • Evidence of Continuing Professional Development.
  • Pharmacy Technician or dispenser's qualification or previous experience preferred.
  • Minimum of three years in a medicine orientated environment.
  • Computer literacy - knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint and Clinical System e.g. EMIS.
