Job summary

Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board (North Wales) seeks an enthusiastic professional for its Pharmacy Technical Services QC/QA team. The role focuses on maintaining quality standards, supporting MHRA licenses, and developing services for safer medicines.

Responsibilities

Job Overview

It is an exciting time for Pharmacy Technical Services across North Wales. Through the Transforming access to medicines (TrAMS) programme the future for technical services is brighter than ever. We have a fantastic opportunity to join our Quality Control and Quality Assurance department which is a key part of the broader Pharmacy Technical Services team across BCUHB. You will be supporting the team with maintaining standards to support MHRA specials manufacturing licenses and progressing with service developments. Due to the critical nature of our work, you will be expected to follow departmental standard operating procedures, comply with Good Manufacturing (GMP) and Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) and demonstrate good attention to detail.

Pharmacy Technical Services supports training and development of all our staff and provides the opportunity for career progression in a variety of areas. You will be given opportunities to attend training courses and achieve qualifications where appropriate for your development. Previous laboratory experience or working within Pharmacy Technical services is desirable but full training will be provided. We are looking for an enthusiastic individual who contributes to and works well within our existing team, sharing our focus on developing the quality services we offer through putting the needs of our patients first. You must be able to work to a high standard, be self-motivated and have good organisational, accuracy and communication skills.

Main duties of the job
  • To provide a Pharmaceutical QC laboratory service to all users of the service.
  • To follow laboratory procedures in all areas of the department to ensure the quality, purity and efficacy of therapeutic and diagnostic Pharmaceuticals in accordance with GMP and Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) regulatory compliance.
  • To work in the chemistry lab and use a variety of analytical techniques, including HPLC and ICP, to test aseptically prepared medicines to ensure that they are safe, efficacious and of the appropriate quality.
  • To work in the microbiology lab performing microbiological testing of aseptically prepared products.
  • Perform environmental monitoring.
  • Work in all sections (Chemistry and Microbiology) of the Pharmaceutical QC Laboratory.
  • To be an integral member of the analytical team to undertake routine and developmental analytical work.
  • Perform environmental monitoring for the production units across BCU as required.
  • Perform a wide variety of routine and non-routine duties in relation to the chemical and microbiological testing of purchased and prepared medicines across BCUHB.
  • Exercise a degree of autonomy and control in the performance of allocated duties.
  • Use own initiative whilst working to time schedules and under pressure.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
  • BTEC Pharmaceutical Sciences with NVQ Level 3 Pharmacy Services or The Principles of Aseptic Pharmaceuticals Processing (Level 3), OR equivalent scientific qualification at degree level
  • Appropriate Professional Registration
Desirable criteria
  • Supervisory management qualification or accreditation, or equivalent experience
  • Training qualification or accreditation, or equivalent experience
Experience
Essential criteria
  • Experience working in a laboratory, MHRA Licenced Manufacturing Unit, or comparable production environment
Desirable criteria
  • Understanding of or experience in a Quality Assurance / Quality Control role
Aptitude And Abilities
Essential criteria
  • Effective communication skills including being able to present complex information, share knowledge and influence others
  • Strong organisational skills, including being able to plan and document complex schedules and processes, and prioritise tasks to meet deadlines
  • Ability to analyse data, identify improvements and solve complex problems,
  • Computer skills to include word processing and data entry i.e. spreadsheets and databases
  • Manual dexterity to use highly scientific instruments and equipment, and good hand-eye co-ordination
  • Welsh Language Skills are desirable levels 1 to 5 in understanding, speaking, reading, and writing in Welsh
