Job description
Personal Assistant (PA) for 11-Year-Old Boy with Autism and Global Developmental Delay

We are looking for a caring, patient, and creative Personal Assistant (PA) to support our 11-year-old son, who has Autism and Global Developmental Delay, to enjoy afterschool activities once or twice a week. Our son is a kind, polite, and caring boy who can be quiet at first, but once he gets to know you, he becomes very chatty and full of fun. He enjoys YouTube, Roblox, gaming, Anime, The Simpsons, the cinema, bowling, trampolining, theme parks, swimming, and exploring places like the Angel of the North.

We’d love to find someone who can encourage him to try new activities, build his confidence, and develop his social and communication skills, ideally away from screens!

What We’re Looking For
  • Patient, understanding, and flexible; creative and enthusiastic, able to suggest or plan fun activities and outings
  • Encouraging and resilient, able to support him when he finds situations challenging
  • Aware of local SEN (Special Educational Needs) groups or community clubs he could join
  • Proactive, perhaps introducing him to new hobbies such as boxing, football, karate, or other interests that help build confidence and social skills

Our son sometimes struggles when he’s out of his normal routine or when he finds an activity uninteresting; he may want to leave. If something knocks his confidence, he may avoid trying again. His PA will need to gently build his resilience, encourage him to carry on, and celebrate his successes along the way.

Responsibilities
  • Pick up from school in Morpeth and transport him to activities or home (30-minute drive) or from home then to activities.
  • Plan and support enjoyable outings or hobbies that build independence and social skills.
  • Encourage participation in new experiences and community groups.
  • Support him to complete small life skills tasks, such as shopping for ingredients and cooking simple meals together.
  • Communicate with parents to share how sessions are going.
Requirements
  • A full driving licence and access to a car.
  • Experience working with or supporting children, ideally with additional needs.
  • Understanding of Autism and Global Developmental Delay (or a willingness to learn).
  • Reliability, compassion, and a sense of fun are essential.

Additional Information: Hours and days are flexible to suit both your schedule and our son’s needs. The role offers a lovely opportunity to make a real difference in a young boy’s life by helping him build confidence, independence, and friendships. If you are creative, caring, and keen to support a child with additional needs to thrive, we’d love to hear from you.

Key Responsibilities
  • Social + Leisure activities.
  • Support to remain independent.
Training
  • Essential PA Guide.
  • Safeguarding Adults/Children.
  • Food Hygiene.
  • Hand hygiene.
  • Autism / Aspergers.
Transportation
  • Full UK driving license.
  • Own personal car.
