Job summary

Compass Community Schools in Newton-le-Willows is seeking a dedicated Physical Education teacher to deliver engaging PE lessons for pupils aged 7–17 and to inspire a love of sport while supporting broader curriculum goals.

You will join a trauma-informed team, bring strong QTS/PGCE credentials, and contribute to the school’s inclusive, high‑quality education for children with SEMH and SEND.

Qualifications

• Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) / QTLS or Post Graduate Education Certificate (PGCE)
• Proven record of exceptional teaching.
• Ability/willingness to teach Physical Education, Dance and/or Performing Arts to GCSE or equivalent vocational level.
• Strong desire to work inclusively within an emotionally literate environment, supporting children with SEMH.
• Experience of crisis-management/managing challenging behaviours and working with children with SEMH difficulties.
• Proven experience of implementing a creative and academically engaging curriculum meeting individual pupil needs while maintaining high standards.
• Experience of working with hard-to-reach or disengaged families.

Who we are

Compass Community Schools is proud to announce the opening of a brand new school in Newton-le-Willows, set to welcome its first pupils in January 2027.

This exciting new provision reflects Compass Community Schools' ongoing commitment to delivering high-quality, inclusive education for children and young people with special educational needs - in a nurturing and supportive environment.

Our children come from a wide range of backgrounds but all have Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs (SEMH) - and many will also have other Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) such as Autism, ADHD and communication difficulties. Many of our pupils will have suffered significant trauma and adverse childhood experiences; and may have social care involvement.

The work we do is both varied and challenging and, as a trauma and attachment-informed organisation, all staff are provided with extensive therapeutic training and support to ensure they understand the needs of each of our learners - and treat each with a high level of dignity and respect.

Our closely triangulated approach places the child at the centre of our decision-making - ensuring that education and therapy professionals, parents/carers, local authority teams and, most importantly, our students - can work together to secure outstanding outcomes for all.

The Role

We are all primarily teachers of children before teachers of subjects. Central to this role is knowing the child, building professional, nurturing and positive relationships and motivating students.

We are looking for a dedicated and enthusiastic Physical Education teacher - who also has the experience and ability to deliver other aspects of the curriculum - to inspire our pupils to develop their physical skills, promote healthy lifestyles, develop a love of PE and foster teamwork. The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering engaging PE lessons to pupils aged 7 to 17, and encouraging pupils to actively participate in sports and physical activities (including competitions and extra-curricular opportunities - e.g. Duke of Edinburgh)...

The Right Person

• Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) / QTLS or Post Graduate Education Certificate (PGCE)
• A proven record of exceptional teaching.
• An excellent, efficient and emotionally intelligent communicator.
• The ability/willingness to teach a subject specialism (Physical Education, Dance and/or Performing Arts) to BTEC, GCSE or equivalent vocational level.
• A strong desire to work inclusively within an emotionally literate environment, supporting children who have experienced adverse childhood experiences (ACEs).
• Experience of crisis-management/managing challenging behaviours and working with children with SEMH difficulties.
• Proven experience of implementing a creative and academically engaging curriculum which meets the needs of individual pupils, whilst maintaining high standards of education.
• Experience of effective working with hard-to-reach or disengaged families.

To enable us to provide a broad and balanced curriculum, and to supplement the skills of the teachers that we have already appointed, it would also be advantageous to receive applications from those who not only have the ability to deliver GCSE level, but also have the knowledge and skills to offer at least one of the following:

• GCSE Physical Education
• GCSE Dance
• GCSE Performing Arts,
• Or any other similar additional courses and/or qualifications.
