Overview

Expleo is a leading Global Engineering Services Provider with UK presence in 10 locations. We are seeking a PCB Design Engineer to provide PCB design services to our client at one of their sites in Glasgow/Belfast/Crawley. The successful candidate is expected to be conversant with the latest technology in PCB design and fabrication, using it to add value to our client’s designs by improving design integrity, yield, testability & manufacturability. The role is expected to be Hybrid with attendance at the relevant client site. The successful candidate should ideally have experience designing PCBs for high reliability applications.

We are looking for an energetic and driven engineer with broad expertise, however of particular interest would be candidates with (in order of priority) aerospace, military, marine or rail experience.

Responsibilities

• The PCB Design Engineer will perform, but is not limited to the following type of activities centred on generation of PCB designs into all phases of the development programme of cutting‑edge defence products:
  • Creates new components as needed adding to the client library
  • Performs component placement whilst trading off the myriad of requirements that may conflict
  • Generates routing whilst minimising noise/EMI
  • Implements strategies for management of thermal issues
  • Adheres to the specific client design rules and understands the capabilities of specified PCB manufacturer to ensure a high yield
  • Works with mechanical designers to ensure electronics and mechanical parts mesh perfectly and are manufacturable (Poka‑yoke)

Qualifications

• Degree level qualification in Electrical/Electronic Engineering
• A lower qualification would be acceptable for example HNC/HND should the candidate be able to demonstrate significant demonstrable experience in lieu

Essential skills

• Working knowledge of different types of PCB design and technology:
• At least two or more of the following: Digital, HDI, RF & Analogue, mixed signal, flexi‑rigid
• Define board stack‑ups including selection of materials and impedance definitions
• Signal Integrity Analysis
• Understand electrical constraints and enter in CAD constraint manager tool
• Apply Design Rule Checking for DFx (test, assembly, manufacture)
• Manufacturing data pack creation and manipulation:
• Gerbers, drill files, x-y placement, assembly & detail drawings, ODB++, etc
• Working knowledge of IPC design standards (Eg IPC-222x series)

Desired skills

• Perform layout for high density interconnect (e.g. blind & buried VIAs)
• Understanding of high speed layout practices (e.g. signal return paths)
• Power Integrity analysis
• Switch mode power supply layout considerations and high current applications (e.g. EMC)
• Knowledge of high voltage requirements and associated constraints

Experience

• Experience in PCB design delivering complex designs
• Ability to use Cadence Allegro (Main PCB layout tool)
• Other CAD tools an advantage (Altium, Visula)
• Familiarity with the latest component packages such is high ball count BGA
• Experience of delivery high reliability electronics for hostile environments in industries such as aerospace, military, marine or rail
